This volume celebrates the powerful late work of Clyfford Still (1904-1980), the pioneer of Abstract Expressionism and one of the most influential and enigmatic painters of this vanguard group, which included artists such as Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, and Willem De Kooning. The large-scale paintings of Still's late career are virtually unknown to the public and many are published here for the first time. This revelatory book investigates the paintings and drawings Still made after his move to rural Maryland in 1961. This marks a particularly fertile period for Still; here, he made over 375 works on canvass and a staggering 1,100 works on paper before his death in 1980 at the age of 75. Given Still's especially reclusive posture later in life and the fact that none of the artworks in Still's estate were exhibited or made available to anyone before the opening of the Clyfford Still Museum in Denver in 2011, this publication of 40 paintings and 30 works on paper is expecially meaningful. The publication also coincides with a landmark exhibition of these works at the Clyfford Still Museum. Essays by scholars Dean Sobel and David Anfam show how Still's art changed in a signficant way in the early 1960s--perhaps most notable was a general lightening of his palette and an increasingly economy of imagery. Implied movement becomes more vivid, as if his painted forms are being set in motion by invisible forces. Equally compelling are the instances where Still returned full force in the 1970s to large scale works in which literally pounds of paints are troweled across the surface with this new dynamism. The artists Alex Katz and Dorothea Rockburne contribute personal texts pondering the notion of "late work." Richly illustrated with previously unpublished artworks and archival photographs, this important volume offers insights into a body of work far richer and more complex than previously understood."--
