In 1995 the Science and Technology Committee published a wide-ranging inquiry into Human Genetics and expressed concern about the use of genetic test results by insurance companies (HC 41-I Session 1994-95). Since then many insurance companies have continued to use genetic test results and so this report looks at the relevance and reliability of such tests and the wider consequences for research and patient care. One of its conclusions is that there should be a voluntary moratorium for the next two years. During this time research should be done to establish the actuarial and scientific relevance of genetic tests to the assessment of premiums and wider healthcare issues.
