A story of the physical, emotional and artistic journey of Hannah Russell as she travels from the back streets of the East End of London to the noisy bazaars and sandy wastes of Egypt, and back to the family home in Kent. Hannah meets and becomes friends with fairy tale author Mary De Morgan, believing she has found love in their relationship. But Hannah discovers that where there is devotion there is also deceit, and with hope also dwells despair.
