When the MTS Oceanos sank off the Transkei coast 19 years ago on August 4, 1991, the world was shocked to learn that most the crew left the passengers to their fate when they took the first lifeboat off the sinking ship. The captain wanted to join the crew, but the ship's entertainers refused to let him go. However, the next day he pushed his way to the front of the queue to be airlifted off by helicopter, also leaving the rest of the passengers to their fate.
