Because of internal disputes and disagreeable working conditions, Harry Sparrow left the FBI and eventually created a successful construction company. He is close friends with his next door neighbors, Jim, a major league pitcher who is recovering from an arm injury, and his wife, Holly, an up-an-coming newspaper journalist who is working on an article she is keeping secret until she has double-checked all her facts and has polished the story. She is murdered, their home is ransacked, and Harry is stunned when Jim is taken into police custody as a suspect. This angers Harry so he steps in and using his former FBI training is determined to do whatever he can to help solve the murder and have Jim released by the police.
Harry learns Holly was writing something in secret and no one knows where she has hidden it. He stumbles onto vague clues that suggest someone very wealthy and powerful was aware of what Holly was writing and had her eliminated because he didn't want her to complete the story. That person is deter-mined to find her hidden notes and papers and will deal ruthlessly with anyone that begins poking around in his business.
As Harry probes deeper in an attempt to find Holly's murderer, attempts are made on his life and his construction business suffers serious damage. The unknown man who is causing death and destruction is a person who is willing to kill anyone and destroy anything in a effort to remain un-touched by the scandal Holly's story will cause if it is found and is published.
