In The Girl Behind the Curtains Julia Horigan uses her imagination and the language of poetry to recreate Anne Franks life in Nazi-controlled Amsterdam. Poem after poem takes the reader inside Franks mind as she discusses Hitler budding adolescence ice cream parlors the Keystone Kops luna moths and first kisses. The poems seem as though Anne wrote them herself. Based on entries from Anne Franks diary and historical accounts of her short life they engage and haunt in ways that complement the original diary causing us to question yet again prejudice subjugation violence and the unspeakable horrors of war. This work with its historical notes is a powerful teaching tool.
