Probabilistic Safety Assessment methodology has evolved over a period of time and is increasingly being used in support of design reviews, operational decisions and regulatory reviews, not only for nuclear power plants but many other engineering systems like launch systems, aircraft systems, process plants etc. However, Probabilistic Safety Assessment just provides an input along with other conventional deterministic methods in support of decision. This approach wherein PSA input along with the conventional defence-in-depth principles are utilized for taking decisions is called risk-informed approach. There are situations when the decisions could be taken exclusively based on PSA results. This is possible when the uncertainly in input data and models are relatively low that could be absorbed for the end applications.
This process of decision-making is called risk-based decisions. In 126 articles Reliability, Safety and Hazard covers the topics, such as system modeling, uncertainty assessment, simulations, which are not only relevant but brings out the excellence that has been achieved towards application of risk-informed approach.
There are many case studies presented in this book which help bridge the gap between research and development work performed in the area of reliability and safety engineering to the real-time applications. The application of these topics includes Nuclear Power Plants, Research Reactors, Heavy Water Plants, Petroleum & Process Industries, Electronics and Telecommunication Systems etc.
