A famous college/pro football player, Dave Parker, hires a small-time private investigator, Ray Spelling to help him make pay offs to a black mailer. But Parker is murdered, and there are too many suspects: the KKK, a neo-Klan group, a militant black leader, and the man who is black mailing him. Spelling tries to solve the murder, though in truth his life is a series of failures to solve anything meaningful. But this time things are different, and the crimes will yield their mysteries to persistence.
