Just one hundred years ago, grizzly bears roamed from Missouri to California, and from the Mexican interior to the Arctic Circle. Today their home range in the lower forty-eight states is just a sliver of what it was in the past---almost exclusively in and around the Rocky Mountains of western Montana and Wyoming. There may be no more than a thousand grizzlies in this area. Jim Cole has been traveling bear country, with camera and journal in hand, for nearly three decades. His goal is to learn by watching, and then to share what he has seen. Through his photographs and stories, we too can begin to understand the great bears---with all their individual personalities, family loyalties, and wisdom.
