This is a story tht takes place in the United States after the Civil War draws to a close. It follows a returning confederate soldier through the county ravaged in war to return home only to find it destroyed and his young wife killed. He learns who is reponsible and in a determined rage, sets out on a quest through the West to track down his wife's killer and exact his justice. Along the way he overcomes betrayal of a friend, getting hung, dying in the desert, stampedes, shootouts, becoming an outlaw and becomes a man totally different than when he left the war.
