Haki R. Madhubuti is an award-winning poet, publisher, essayist, educator and a best selling author of over thirty-one books including Black Men: Obsolete, Single, Dangerous? The Afrikan American Family in Transition, Don't Cry Scream and Liberation Narratives: New and Collected Poems 1966-2009. Among his many firsts, he was the first Black poet to be Poet-in-Residence at a major Ivy League university (Cornell University, 1968-69); and the first Poet-in-Residence at Howard University (1970-78). Madhubuti is the founder and publisher of Third World Press (1967), co-founder of the Institute of Positive Education (1969), New Concept School (1972), Betty Shabazz International Charter School (1998), the Barbara Ann Sizemore Campus (2005), and the DuSable Leadership Academy (200S). An award-winning poet, Madhubuti is the recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts and National Endowment for the Humanities fellowships, the American Book Award, and in 2010 he was awarded the Hurston/Wright Legacy prize in poetry for his book, Liberation Narratives. Haiti R. Madhubuti is the former University Distinguished Professor and professor of English at Chicago State University where he was the founder and director-emeritus of the Gwendolyn Brooks Center and director of the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing Program. Madhubuti is the 2010-2011 Ida B. Wells-Barnett University Professor at DePaul University. Gwendolyn Brooks was the example for us all, a consistent monument in the real, closed eyed to the beauty and strength she radiated.
