The aviation industry in the 21st century is faced with an entirely different range of challenges than have previously existed. Internationally, the impact of the September 11 attacks and the intense commercial pressures deriving from increased competition and the aftermath of the SARS epidemic have had enormous impact upon commerical airline operations. DVT claims, skyrocketing aviation insurance premiums, sky marshalls and other areas of increased security arrangements are novel and enduring aspects of the global aviation scene. During this time the pace at which aviation law has developed is commensurate with the rate of increase in regulatory and legislative control imposed upon aviation activities throughout the world. Domestically, Australia has experienced its own unique challenges: the collapse and demise of Ansett Airlines; the entry of the low cost carriers with Virgin Blue and JetStar; airport privatisation; increased environmental concerns relating to aircraft operations; and the freeing of the Australian-New Zealand aviation market. Legislatively, Australia is in the process of implementing the most significant overhaul of the regime since the 1920's. This second edition of "Aviation Law in Australia" has been significantly enlarged to accommodate all these developments and the expansive nature of aviation law.
