Sarah Frances Williams was born at home in Essex County, Virgina on October 7, 1917, the youngest of four sisters and a brother. After graduation from the University of Baltimore and completing the Maryland Bar examination she accepted a position with the Federal Government and moved to Washington, D.C. She retired in 1973 with over 31 years of service, and was senior associate general counsel in the Defense Logistics Agency. Sarah died at home on Demember 6, 1984. Buried amongst the 3,000 plus volumes of her library, was a small, three-ring notebook of her typed poems that nobody had known about before then. I have finallly gotten around to reproducing them in this small volume, primarily for the benefit of her family."--John W. Knapp, compiler and the oldest of the nephews and nieces, father to Washington and Lee University faculty member, Elizabeth P. Knapp and the executor of Sarah's estate
