Katarina Von Rahmel fights ongoing fears caused by her experiences during World War II, but she still volunteers for risky expeditions into East Berlin with her brothers, to help those who need to escape the new Communist regime. While between missions to the other side of the Berlin Wall, she goes from husband to husband to lover. One man is determined to destroy Katarina and her loved ones, while another is there to rescue her every time. Yet her brother the priest is the only one she believes can save her. Is she forever doomed?
