This book is the result of a study carried out in Guangzhou (Canton), financed by the European Union and focusing on the perceptions that the Chinese have of Europe and Europeans. The perceptions tell us nothing or little about the social reality and the real behaviour of others. They are above all an implicit confrontation with the values of those who pronounce them. They act as a projection. Here, they express the framework of thought and implicit values of the Chinese, at the same time as they give a true idea of what the Chinese think of Europeans. It is the role of the social sciences to deconstruct these perceptions in order to objectivize them, that is to say put into perspective their link with the reality described. This done, it is possible to create a certain distance in relation to what is expressed, a certain relativism, the existence of which is necessary in an intercultural perspective.
Diffractive lens arrays are proposed in this work for application in reflected-light confocal microscopes. They have overcome the limitations between fields of view and resolution of traditional objectives. Experiments of multi-spot confocal imaging in surface metrology and fluorescence microscopy have been demonstrated based on the proposed concepts, which have shown capabilities of high-resolution measurement over a large area.
Good governance and anti-corruption efforts were expected to enhance soft power overseas. The party-state successfully governed China for decades relying on its controversial governance approaches. The country has visibly demonstrated economic and social development. However, China's growing influence has failed to be recognised as soft power, being viewed rather as sharp power most times. The monograph investigates whether China is mindful of exporting its political ideas and whether it considers its governance model to be the pillar of its soft power portfolio. Through framing analysis of media coverage and in-depth interviews with Australian public diplomacy experts, the monograph presents how Australia, a western country with close economic ties with China, interprets China's intended narrative regarding its governance model and development. Examining the congruity between China's projection and Australia's mediation sheds a new light on the relationship between domestic governance, soft power, and sharp power. By sketching out Beijing's ambitions and attempts, the monograph draws implications about China's public diplomacy and the future global order.
This book provides a relatively complete introduction to the methods used in computational condensed matter. A wide range of electronic structure theories are introduced, including traditional quantum chemistry methods, density functional theory, many-body perturbation theory, and more. Molecular dynamics simulations are also discussed, with extensions to enhanced sampling and free-energy calculation techniques including umbrella sampling, meta-dynamics, integrated tempering sampling, etc. As a further extension beyond the standard Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics, some simulation techniques for the description of quantum nuclear effects are also covered, based on Feynman's path-integral representation of quantum mechanics. The book aims to help beginning graduate students to set up a framework of the concepts they should know before tackling the physical/chemical problems they will face in their research.
Abelian varieties can be classified via their moduli. In positive characteristic the structure of the p-torsion-structure is an additional, useful tool. For that structure supersingular abelian varieties can be considered the most special ones. They provide a starting point for the fine description of various structures. For low dimensions the moduli of supersingular abelian varieties is by now well understood. In this book we provide a description of the supersingular locus in all dimensions, in particular we compute the dimension of it: it turns out to be equal to Äg.g/4Ü, and we express the number of components as a class number, thus completing a long historical line where special cases were studied and general results were conjectured (Deuring, Hasse, Igusa, Oda-Oort, Katsura-Oort).
CO2 capture and sequestration (CCS) is a major means to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, especially from centralized energy conversion sites. Many studies have been conducted either on the CO2 capture side or on the sequestration side, but research on CO2 transport, which connects the capture side and the sequestration side, is rather limited. CO2 capture sites and sequestration sites are usually not geographically located in the same region, thus planning and design of CO2 transport infrastructure must be considered before capture and sequestration activities are conducted. Previously, some studies have been conducted to address the optimal planning problem of CO2 pipelines network via a source-sink match approach, which is applicable to early stages of CCS development when the total amount of CO needed to be transported is rather small. However, in scenarios with large amount of CO to be transported, the source-sink match approach appears to be less efficient. In this manuscript, we propose a superstructure based modelling and optimization framework for optimal planning of CO2 transport pipelines network, where all CO2 emissions sources and sequestrations sites can be connected by pipelines, and pump stations can also be built along pipelines to maintain the pressure of CO transported. We also provide a case study of a region in North China, with 45 emissions sources and four sequestration sites. Different configurations of pipelines network are illustrated in scenarios with low, medium, and high CO2 capture rates.

A follow on from the author's work "Finite Elements in Heat Transfer" which we published 11/94, and which is a powerful CFD programme that will run on a PC. The fluid flow market is larger than the previous, and this package is good value in comparison with other software packages in Computational Fluid Dynamics, which are generally very expensive. The work in general copes with non-Newtonian laminar flow using the finite element method, and some basic theory of the subject is included in the opening chapters of the book.
