Documentary filmmaking is one of the most vibrant areas of media activity in the Chinese world, with many independent filmmakers producing documentaries that deal with a range of sensitive socio-political problems, bringing to their work a strongly ethical approach. This book identifies notable similarities and crucial differences between new Chinese-language documentaries in mainland China and Taiwan. It outlines how documentary filmmaking has developed, contrasts independent documentaries with dominant official state productions, considers how independent documentary filmmakers go about their work, including the work of exhibiting their films and connecting with audiences, and discusses the content of their documentaries, showing how the filmmakers portray a wide range of subject matter regarding places and people, and how they deal with particular issues including the underprivileged, migrants and women in an ethical way. Throughout the book demonstrates how successful Chinese-language independent documentary filmmaking is, with many appearances at international film festivals and a growing number of award-winning titles.
Driven by the ever-increasing amount of mobile data, cellular networks evolve from small cell network to ultra-dense heterogeneous networks, to provide high system capacity and spectrum efficiency. By bringing base stations (BSs) to the approximate spatial scale and number magnitude, ultra-dense heterogeneous networks would definitely bring unprecedented paradigm changes to the network design. Firstly, along with densification of small cells, inter-cell interference becomes severe and may deteriorate performance of mobile users. Assigning network resources including bandwidth and time slots, while avoiding interference, desires serious consideration. Secondly, the coverage area of BSs becomes small and irregular, resulting in much frequent and complicated handovers when mobile users move around. How to ensure continuous communication and implement effective mobility management, and inter-cell resource allocation and cooperation, remains a challenging issue. Thirdly, such dynamic change in spatial dimension enables us to re-investigate available and ongoing communications and networking techniques, such as massive MIMO, CoMP, millimeter waves (mmWaves), carrier aggregation, full duplex radio, and D2D communications. To address the aforementioned challenging research issues, this book will investigate the service and QoE provisioning in ultra-dense heterogeneous networks. In particular, firstly we introduce ultra-dense heterogeneous networks by careful definition regarding spatial deployment, generic characteristics, and requirements of ultra-dense heterogeneous networks in order to ensure QoE of mobile users. Secondly, we depict the resource management among small cells in close proximity, mobility management for mobile users (address the super-frequent handovers), and interference management (dealing with the interference due to frequency-reuse in the vicinity). Thirdly, we study the enabling factors, and the integration of ultra-dense heterogeneous networks with enabling technologies, such as massive-MIMO, cloud-RAN, mmWaves, D2D, IoT. Finally, we conclude the book and indicate future directions and challenges.
In this milestone work, prominent China film scholar Yingjin Zhang proposes "polylocality" as a new conceptual framework for investigating the shifting spaces of contemporary Chinese cinema in the age of globalization. Questioning the national cinema paradigm, Zhang calls for comparative studies of underdeveloped areas beyond the imperative of transnationalism. Singular systems which are also referred to as descriptor systems, semi-state systems, differential- algebraic systems or generalized state-space systems have attracted much attention because of their extensive applications in the Leontief dynamic model, electrical and mechanical models, etc. This monograph presented up-to-date research developments and references on stability analysis and design of nonlinear singular systems. It investigated the problems of practical stability, strongly absolute stability, input-state stability and observer design for nonlinear singular systems and the problems of absolute stability and multi-objective control for nonlinear singularly perturbed systems by using Lyapunov stability theory, comparison principle, S-procedure and linear matrix inequality (LMI), etc. Practical stability, being quite different from stability in the sense of Lyapunov, is a significant performance specification from an engineering point of view. The basic concepts and results on practical stability for standard state-space systems were generalized to singular systems. For Lur’e type descriptor systems (LDS) which were the feedback interconnection of a descriptor system with a static nonlinearity, strongly absolute stability was defined and Circle criterion and Popov criterion were derived. The notion of input-state stability (ISS) for nonlinear singular systems was defined based on the concept of ISS for standard state-space systems and the characteristics of singular systems. LMI-based sufficient conditions for ISS of Lur’e singular systems were proposed. Furthermore, observer design for nonlinear singular systems was studied and some observer design methods were proposed by the obtained stability results and convex optimization algorithms. Finally, absolute stability and multi-objective control of nonlinear singularly perturbed systems were considered. By Lyapunov functions, absolute stability criteria of Lur’e singularly perturbed systems were proposed and multi-objective control of T-S fuzzy singularly perturbed systems was achieved. Compared with the existing results, the obtained methods do not depend on the decomposition of the original system and can produce a determinate upper bound for the singular perturbation parameter.

Since the beginning of the twentieth century, modern Chinese intellectuals, reformers, revolutionaries, leftist journalists, and idealistic youth had often crossed the increasing gap between the city and the countryside, which made the act of “going to the countryside” a distinctively modern experience and a continuous practice in China. Such a spatial crossing eventually culminated in the socialist state program of “down to the villages” movements during the 1960s and 1970s. What, then, was the special significance of “going to the countryside” before that era? Going to the Countryside deals with the cultural representations and practices of this practice between 1915 and 1965, focusing on individual homecoming, rural reconstruction, revolutionary journeys to Yan’an, the revolutionary “going down to the people” as well as going to the frontiers and rural hometowns for socialist construction. As part of the larger discourses of enlightenment, revolution, and socialist industrialization, “going to the countryside” entailed new ways of looking at the world and ordinary people, brought about new experiences of space and time, initiated new means of human communication and interaction, generated new forms of cultural production, revealed a fundamental epistemic shift in modern China, and ultimately created a new aesthetic, social, and political landscape. As a critical response to the “urban turn” in the past few decades, this book brings the rural back to the central concern of Chinese cultural studies and aims to bridge the city and the countryside as two types of important geographical entities, which have often remained as disparate scholarly subjects of inquiry in the current state of China studies. Chinese modernity has been characterized by a dual process that created problems from the vast gap between the city and the countryside but simultaneously initiated constant efforts to cope with the gap personally, collectively, and institutionally. The process of “crossing” two distinct geographical spaces was often presented as continuous explorations of various ways of establishing the connectivity, interaction, and relationship of these two imagined geographical entities. Going to the Countryside argues that this new body of cultural productions did not merely turn the rural into a constantly changing representational space; most importantly, the rural has been constructed as a distinct modern experiential and aesthetic realm characterized by revolutionary changes in human conceptions and sentiments.

Black phosphorus (BP)-based two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials are used as components in practical industrial applications in biomedicine, electronics, and photonics. The Internet of Vehicles (IoV) is referred to as an efficient and inevitable convergence of the Internet of Things, intelligent transportation systems, edge / fog and cloud computing, and big data, all of which could be intelligently harvested for the cooperative vehicular safety and non-safety applications as well as cooperative mobility management. A secure and low-latency communication is, therefore, indispensable to meet the stringent performance requirements of the safety-critical vehicular applications. Whilst the challenges surrounding low latency are being addressed by the researchers in both academia and industry, it is the security of an IoV network which is of paramount importance, as a single malicious message is perfectly capable enough of jeopardizing the entire networking infrastructure and can prove fatal for the vehicular passengers and the vulnerable pedestrians. This book thus investigates the promising notion of trust in a bid to strengthen the resilience of the IoV networks. It not only introduces trust categorically in the context of an IoV network, i.e., in terms of its fundamentals and salient characteristics, but further envisages state-of-the-art trust models and intelligent trust threshold mechanisms for segregating both malicious and non-malicious vehicles. Furthermore, open research challenges and recommendations for addressing the same are discussed in the same too.
Sharp increase in house prices combined with the extraordinary Chinese lending growth during 2009 has led to concerns of an emerging real estate bubble. We find that, for China as a whole, the current levels of house prices do not seem significantly higher than would be justified by underlying fundamentals. However, there are signs of overvaluation in some cities’ mass-market and luxury segments. Unlike advanced economies before 2007-8, prices have tended to correct frequently in China.Given persistently low real interest rates, lack of alternative investment and mortgage-to-GDP trend, rapid property price growth in China has, and will continue to have,a structural driver.
This open access book aims to provide an initial but comprehensive roadmap for the Chinese civil litigation system. It starts with some basic concepts of the Chinese judicial system (e.g., court system, case numbering, hierarchical trial system, etc.) and runs through the entire process and most aspects of civil litigation cases (e.g., jurisdiction, service of process, rules of evidence, enforcement, representative actions, etc.). The first target audience for this book is lawyers outside of mainland China. For professors and law students, this book also serves as a window into the Chinese judicial system in a short period of time. It is my hope that this book serves as a backdrop for additional observations of Chinese judicial practice, such as a review of recent cases. This is an open access book.

This book will address the gaps of current studies: (1) Existing study conclusions around eWOM and consumer behaviors are not perfect. At present, many studies emphasize the positive effect of eWOM on consumer behaviors, but there are still many different views around the influencing mechanism; there is, in particular, a lack of study on the influencing mechanisms in different cultures; partly the result of different product types and customer groups. This study uses personal consumer electronics as its subject: specifically, the tablet computer. In this way, the study will enable comparability in the assessment of eWOM in different countries and the potential differences in the customers in the two countries. In addition, this study also discusses the overall trend of WOM communication among customers and compares its impact on both countries. (2) Insufficient research on the impact of Internet multi-media WOM marketing. This study believes that the content of online reviews is not the only standard that influences customers' choices. The manner and methods of information delivery and presentation also shape customers’ opinions. This study explores the means of giving an opinion about a personal electronic product and their diversity and influence on different customers in a diversified information context. (3) Insufficient research on consumer trust. Albeit key to successful marketing, consumer trust has not been sufficiently studied for its role in online marketing. Consumer trust consists of different dimensions. Some recognition at various sub-levels of a product helps establish a consumer’s trust in the product’s online reputation. This study analyzes the relationship between eWOM marketing and consumer trust at each sub-level.
