Cora Wilson Stewart (1875–1958) was an elementary school teacher and county school superintendent in eastern Kentucky who, in the fall of 1911, decided to open the classrooms in her district to adult pupils. Convinced that education could eliminate the poverty that plagued the region, she founded the Moonlight School movement, ultimately designed to combat illiteracy. The movement’s motto, “Each one teach one,” characterized education as the responsibility of every literate citizen. Stewart’s Moonlight Schools caught on quickly, and when the state legislature created the Kentucky Illiteracy Commission in 1914, they were operating throughout Kentucky as well as in other states. Cora Wilson Stewart and Kentucky’s Moonlight Schools examines these institutions and analyzes Stewart’s role in shaping education at both the state and national level. Yvonne Honeycutt Baldwin offers a discourse on the problem of illiteracy, which, despite the efforts of Stewart and many who followed in her footsteps, continues to afflict the nation.

The study of the cultural landscape has gained momentum in recent years, revealing new insights to geographers, archaeologists, sociologists and architects. The cultural landscape is often viewed as an emblematic site and thus a key player in the heritage process. This book explores the overlapping and often complex relationships between identity, memory, heritage and the cultural landscape. This book covers some of the most serious mental health conditions that top the global disease burden and affect 3% of the general population. However, most research on psychotic disorders is undertaken in the West, and few studies have been systematically carried out in Asia despite global interest in regional differences. This work offers a unique and coherent account of these disorders and their treatment in Hong Kong over the last thirty years. Chen and his research programme’s pioneering work has ranged from the impact of early intervention on outcomes and relapse prevention, to the renaming of psychosis to reduce stigma. The studies have contributed to wider international debates on the optimal management of the condition. Their investigations in semantics and cognition, as well as cognition-enhancing exercise interventions, have provided novel insights into deficits encountered in psychotic disorders and how they might be ameliorated. Bigger’s pain is seething and unrelenting throughout Richard Wright’s bestseller novel, Native Son (1940), until he states, “Tell Jan hello” to his Lawyer Max. The pain of Richard Wright is reflected this author’s creation—a reflection of Wright’s own pain growing up in Mississippi. Born is 1908 in Roxie, Mississippi near Natchez, the writer is able to create the Bigger character who becomes the most compelling one in twentieth century American literature. Wright came to Memphis, Tennessee after graduating from Smith Robertson school in Jackson, Mississippi and in Black Boy (1945) surreptitiously gets books written by H. L. Mencken, a white male critic of the south. Wright observes Mencken using words as weapons and thinks he, too, can use words as weapons. In doing so, his novels Native Soon and Black Boy catapults his career with Native Son becoming the major black protest novel of the twentieth century.
