In October 1998 a conference was held in Lisbon to celebrate Ludwig Streit's 60th birthday. This book collects some of the papers presented at the conference as well as other essays contributed by the many friends and collaborators who wanted to honor Ludwig Streit's scientific career and personality.The contributions cover many aspects of contemporary mathematical physics. Of particular importance are new results on infinite-dimensional stochastic analysis and its applications to a wide range of physical domains.List of Contributors: S Albeverio, T Hida, L Accardi, I Ya Aref'eva, I V Volovich; A Daletskii, Y Kondratiev, W Karwowski, N Asai, I Kubo, H-H Kuo, J Beckers, Ph Blanchard, G F Dell'Antonio, D Gandolfo, M Sirugue-Collin, A Bohm, H Kaldass, D Bollé, G Jongen, G M Shim, J Bornales, C C Bernido, M V Carpio-Bernido, G Burdet, Ph Combe, H Nencka, P Cartier, C DeWitt-Morette, H Ezawa, K Nakamura, K Watanabe, Y Yamanaka, R Figari, F Gesztesy, H Holden, R Gielerak, G A Goldin, Z Haba, M-O Hongler, Y Hu, B Oksendal, A Sulem, J R Klauder, C B Lang, V I Man'ko, H Ouerdiane, J Potthoff, E Smajlovic, M Röckner, E Scacciatelli, J L Silva, J Stochel, F H Szafraniec, L Vázquez, D N Kozakevich, S Jiménez, V R Vieira, P D Sacramento, R Vilela Mendes, D Volný, P Samek.
It is well known that a wealth of problems of different nature, applied as well as purely theoretic, can be reduced to the study of elliptic equations and their eigen-values. During the years many books and articles have been published on this topic, considering spectral properties of elliptic differential operators from different points of view. This is one more book on these properties. This book is devoted to the study of some classical problems of the spectral theory of elliptic differential equations. The reader will find hardly any intersections with the books of Shubin [Sh] or Rempel-Schulze [ReSch] or with the works cited there. This book also has no general information in common with the books by Egorov and Shubin [EgShu], which also deal with spectral properties of elliptic operators. There is nothing here on oblique derivative problems; the reader will meet no pseudodifferential operators. The main subject of the book is the estimates of eigenvalues, especially of the first one, and of eigenfunctions of elliptic operators. The considered problems have in common the approach consisting of the application of the variational principle and some a priori estimates, usually in Sobolev spaces. In many cases, impor tant for physics and mechanics, as well as for geometry and analysis, this rather elementary approach allows one to obtain sharp results.
In the course of the study, we have used the methodological approach to the scientific substantiation of the comprehensiveness of expert assessments of the mental state of patients-offenders suffering from cerebral-organic pathology. As a result, we have formulated the following general points: The forensic-psychiatric expert procedure is comprehensive in nature due to the participation of medical doctors, medical psychiatrists, and medical psychologists. Medical-social examination, which is carried out for the purposes of determining the social status of patients (disabled or not disabled) and their need for social protection, is a processthat is comprehensive due to participation of medical doctors, medical clinicians, and medical psychologists. The comprehensiveness of expert assessmentsthe forensic psychiatric and the medical social onesis made more complex due to the comprehensiveness of each one of these expert assessments. The methodological approach to the comprehensiveness of expert assessments is based on taking into account the following three principles: the principle of continuity, the principle of cooperation, and the principle of psychological support for patients-offenders, provided to them over the entire length of their medical-social route.
This book comprises seven chapters. The first chapter addresses a phenomenological approach to the concept 'reaction rate', which views the complex reaction as a single unit whose progress if judged from measurements of the formation rates of the reaction participants; it also sets forth the main strategies by which to determine the rates of heterogeneous catalytic reactions. Another approach, a mechanistic one, relying upon the reaction mechanisms considered in the second chapter that has recourse to the Horiuti-Temkin complex reaction kinetics theory and the elementary statement of the graph method application in chemical kinetics. The third, fourth and fifth chapters consistently expound the philosophy of the steady state multiplicity, auto-oscillations, and the reciprocal effect of competitive catalytic reactions. The sixth and seventh chapters concentrate on the kinetics of some pragmatically important heterogeneous and heterogeneous-homogeneous catalytic reactions. Most results, presented in these chapters were obtained in the authors' laboratories.
Many problems of the engineering sciences, physics, and mathematics lead to con volution equations and their various modifications. Convolution equations on a half-line can be studied by having recourse to the methods and results of the theory of Toeplitz and Wiener-Hopf operators. Convolutions by integrable kernels have continuous symbols and the Cauchy singular integral operator is the most prominent example of a convolution operator with a piecewise continuous symbol. The Fredholm theory of Toeplitz and Wiener-Hopf operators with continuous and piecewise continuous (matrix) symbols is well presented in a series of classical and recent monographs. Symbols beyond piecewise continuous symbols have discontinuities of oscillating type. Such symbols emerge very naturally. For example, difference operators are nothing but convolution operators with almost periodic symbols: the operator defined by (A
