Managing climate variability and change remains a key development and food security issue in Bangladesh. Despite significant investments, floods, droughts, and cyclones during the last two decades continue to cause extensive economic damage and impair livelihoods. Climate change will pose additional risks to ongoing efforts to reduce poverty. This book examines the implications of climate change on food security in Bangladesh and identifies adaptation measures in the agriculture sector using a comprehensive integrated framework. First, the most recent science available is used to characterize current climate and hydrology and its potential changes. Second, country-specific survey and biophysical data is used to derive more realistic and accurate agricultural impact functions and simulations. A range of climate risks (i.e. warmer temperatures, higher carbon dioxide concentrations, changing characteristics of floods, droughts and potential sea level rise) is considered to gain a more complete picture of potential agriculture impacts. Third, while estimating changes in production is important, economic responses may to some degree buffer against the physical losses predicted, and an assessment is made of these. Food security is dependent not only on production, but also future food requirements, income levels and commodity prices. Finally, adaptation possibilities are identified for the sector. A radical revision of the politics of race and sexuality within racial capitalism, Uncoupling American Empire provides an original cultural genealogy of how the institutionalization of marriage shaped imagined relationships among working people who were seen as sexually deviant in nineteenth-century U.S. imperial cultures. Departing from the longstanding focus on domesticity as a middle-class white women's imaginary construct of home, nation, and empire, this book foregrounds the relationship between marriage and subjects marked by slavery, prostitution, indentured labor, and colonialism through tracing overlooked linkages among the period's fiction texts, journalistic accounts, pictorial illustrations, and missionary narratives. Yu-Fang Cho's feminist intersectional approaches illuminate the complex web of social difference that uneven access to marriage has historically produced; the cumulative effects of the ironic—and indeed cynical—promise of freedom, equality, and inclusion through sexual conformity; and the central role that cultural imagination plays in forging alternative relations among minoritized subjects.
The ocean–atmosphere exchanges of heat, water, and momentum are key elements of the global climate system. The processes controlling these exchanges, methods by which they may be estimated, and their impacts on the ocean are reviewed, with an emphasis on developments in the past decade. The main characteristics of the long-term mean exchange fields are presented with reference to atmospheric reanalysis, remote sensing, and ship observation-based datasets. Flux measurement and evaluation techniques are discussed in the context of the key observational reference datasets, particularly the critically important growing network of surface flux buoys. A short review of the many flux datasets that are now available is presented with a focus on the ocean heat budget closure problem that remains a leading unresolved issue. Variability in the exchanges is also considered with a focus on (a) changes associated with large-scale modes of atmospheric variability, (b) the effects of anthropogenic climate change, and (c) transfers under extreme conditions. The ocean impacts of changes in the surface fluxes are explored with a focus on modification of near-surface properties, water mass transformation, and the ocean’s overturning circulation. Finally, prospects for future improvements to flux datasets through advances in the synthesis of data from different sources and enhanced observational constraints are discussed.

Recent monographs on Johannine signs tend to focus on a single sign. Other studies that examine multiple signs mainly focus on the first half of John’s Gospel. In Christian circles, most preachers and believers remain preoccupied by the traditional view that John’s Gospel contains only seven signs. However, what constitutes a sign for John, and how signs function to achieve the purpose of the Gospel (John 20:30–31) is far from settled. Three features of this book explore important clues for solving this puzzle: (1) a fresh hypothesis that Jesus’s signs correspond to the four tabernacle signs (a pot of manna, Aaron’s staff, the bronze altar cover, and the bronze serpent), which makes sense given the tabernacle/temple theme of John’s Gospel; (2) a complete study that examines Johannine signs in the whole Gospel systematically to reveal how signs develop the book’s purpose; and (3) an adaptation of a sociolinguistic theory to examine the corresponding texts of the Old Testament and New Testament in light of how language functions in a social event. The author will show how Jesus’s signs fulfill the functions of the four tabernacle signs, and how Jesus’s crucifixion is the “all-inclusive” sign in witnessing to his identity.
