The first biography of an American-born Korean woman, Doing What Had to Be Done is, on the surface, the life story of Dora Yum Kim. But telling more than one woman's story, author Soo-Young Chin offers more than an unusual glimpse at the shaping of a remarkable community activist. In addition as she questions her subject, introduces each chapter, and reflects on how Dora's story relates to her own experience as a Korean-American who immigrated to this country as an adult she carves around Dora's compelling and courageous life story, a story of her own and one of all Korean-Americans. Born in 1921, Dora, as she tells Chin her story, chronicles the shifting salience of gendered ethnic identity as she journeys through her life. Traveling through time and place, she moves from San Francisco's Chinatown where Koreans were a minority within a minority to suburban Dewey Boulevard where Dora and her family attempt to integrate into mainstream America and where she becomes a social worker in the California State Department of Employment. As the Korean immigrant community grows in the late 1960s, Dora becomes deeply involved in community service. She remembers teaching English to senior ci

North Korea’s economic difficulties during the mid-1990s were the decisive factor in fundamentally damaging the North Korean people’s quality of life. The standard of living has deteriorated to extreme levels of deprivation in which the right to food security, the right to health and other minimum needs for human survival are denied. Since its inauguration, the Lee Myung-bak administration has proposed policies that strive to improve the North Korean people’s “quality of life” by providing humanitarian aid to the North. Although concern regarding the “quality of life” has been discussed with a focus on aid provisions, the reality is that there is a lack of specific analyses on this subject. It is true that one can refute such analyses by stating that it would be pointless to discuss the quality of life when the North Korean economy is in a state of ruin. However, an academic approach is necessary in such discussions as a means to evaluate the propriety of applying international views onto the concept of the quality of life. With this perspective, the paper aims to review the possibility of applying international standards onto North Korea in order to systematically analyze the phenomenon that has disintegrated its quality of life. Should the international views be applicable, then this paper will explore the means by which they can be applied while also acknowledging North Korea’s special characteristics Ⅰ. Introduction Ⅱ. Theories on the Quality of Life and an Analytic Framework for its Application in North Korea 1. Current Trends in International Research on the “Quality of Life” 2. Applying the “Quality of Life” Theory to North Korea 3. The Official North Korean Discourse on Life Ⅲ. The Objective Situation of North Korea’s Quality of Life 1. The North Korean People’s Situation Regarding “Food, Clothing, and Housing” 2. The Illusion of “Free” Education and the Widening Inequality in the Quality of Education 3. The Illusion of “Free” Medical Care and the Widening Inequality in the Quality of Medical Services Ⅳ. Subjective Perceptions on Quality of Life 1. The North Korean Authority’s Official Goals for Life and Actual Perceptions 2. The Different Classes’ Quality of Life: From the “Core, Wavering and Hostility” to “Upper, Middle and Lower” 3. Generational Changes in Quality of Life: Transitional Period of the Distribution System, Food Shortages, and the Market Generations 4. Gender Differences in the Perceptions on Quality of Life Ⅴ. Over the past fifteen years, South Korea has transformed itself from an authoritarian government into a new democracy with a vibrant capitalist economy. Modernization, democratization, and globalization have played important roles in this transformation, and have greatly influenced the programs and policies of Korea's Sixth Republic. Covering developments through the 2003 elections, this book shows how the South Korean government and society have been shaped not only by the dynamics of these forces, but also by their interaction with the cultural norms of a post-Confucian society. The author provides a conceptual framework and baseline for examining political developments in Korea, and offers an analysis of the factors that are transforming Korean institutions, society, and politics. He discusses the forces shaping Korea's political economy and the performance of successive ROK governments, and also highlights the challenges faced by the newly elected administration of Roh Moo Huan, the North Korean issue, and more.
There have been many advances in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, but it is still a feared disease with a lot of work left to be done. The importance of gastrointestinal cancer as a frequently occurring disease goes without saying. It accounts for half of human cancer cases but differs from other forms of cancer. Complete prevention is possible through proper treatment of precancerous lesions. There is still no comprehensive book about prevention, early diagnosis, and proper treatment of precancerous lesions and new developed diagnostic modality, and treatment such as endoscopic treatment and minimal invasive surgery and chemotherapy and immunotherapy. Also, this book will contain conservative treatment methods for patients suffering from diverse complications. There will be plentiful clinical cases including endoscopic findings, radiologic images, pathology and treatment outcome in this book. For these reasons, this book will give very valuable information to many gastroenterologists, oncologists , surgeons and general physicians.
This book expresses a quest for inclusion amid feminist, womanist, and mujerista discourses. Hertig's yinist spirituality is a novel attempt to lift up the voices of female, Asian American voices in Christian ecological theology. She coined the term yinist in the 1990s to "name the nameless Asian American feminism." The term yin refers to the feminine energy of Taoism, in contrast to the male yang. This book will be a valuable resource for the academy, churches, and denominational leaders"--
