Hell Without Fires examines the spiritual and earthly results of conversion to Christianity for African-American antebellum writers. Using autobiographical narratives, the book shows how black writers transformed the earthly hell of slavery into a "New Jerusalem," a place they could call home. Yolanda Pierce insists that for African Americans, accounts of spiritual conversion revealed "personal transformations with far-reaching community effects. A personal experience of an individual's relationship with God is transformed into the possibility of liberating an entire community." The process of conversion could result in miraculous literacy, "callings" to preach, a renewed resistance to the slave condition, defiance of racist and sexist conventions, and communal uplift. These stories by five of the earliest antebellum spiritual writers--George White, John Jea, David Smith, Solomon Bayley, and Zilpha Elaw--create a new religious language that merges Christian scripture with distinct retellings of biblical stories, with enslaved people of African descent at their center. Showing the ways their language exploits the levels of meaning of words like master, slavery, sin, and flesh, Pierce argues that the narratives address the needs of those who attempted to transform a foreign god and religion into a personal and collective system of beliefs. The earthly "hell without fires"--one of the writer's characterizations of everyday life for those living in slavery--could become a place where an individual could be both black and Christian, and religion could offer bodily and psychological healing. Pierce presents a complex and subtle assessment of the language of conversion in the context of slavery. Her work will be important to those interested in the topics of slave religion and spiritual autobiography and to scholars of African American and early American literature and religion.

When those who were supposed to nurture you, provide for you, love you, guide you, take care of you, make you feel comfortable instead choose otherwise and disappoint you, the end results can lead to destruction, shame, low self-esteem and/or failure. “The Lord shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace” (Exodus 14:14). The power of choice and having dreams had kept me going, kept me alive. While it is common to find people fixated on their history, the past, or on what other people had done to them, or said about them, none of these will really help you move forward. The good news for me is that my life has taught me a lot. Although there were plenty of things I could not control—like my parents’ anger, the slapping, the beatings, the whooping, the pulling, the name-calling, the putting me down in front of others—I always find strength to remain in a standing position. I had always tried to choose what next best thing for me to do. I had also tried to heal those internal wounds by reading self-help books. By doing so, I had learned better ways to cope and deal with issues, learn to love, appreciate, respect, forgive, and deal with my siblings in a less emotional way. I also know that life will take the meaning that you give to it. I sometimes feel cheated by my parents. I especially think that way because one of the things that children do is to teach their parents, challenge them, and expand their lives. An opportunity or a time in my life I had never lived or even experienced. It all seems like a story of unfinished sentences, of suppressed embraces, of almost belonging, of stammered affection.

Cole is credited with propelling Spelman College (the oldest historically Black womens’ college) to national prominence, little is generally known about the strong academic foundation and legacy she inherited. Contrary to popular belief, the first four presidents of Spelman (including its two co-founders) were White women who led the early development of the College, armed with the belief that former slaves and free Black women should and could receive a college-level education. This book presents the history of Spelman’s foundation through the tenure of its fourth president, Florence M. Read, which ended in 1953. This compelling story is brought up to date by the contributions of Spelman’s current president, Beverly Daniel Tatum, and by Johnnetta B. Cole.The book chronicles how the vision each of these women presidents, and their response to changing social forces, both profoundly shaped Spelman’s curriculum and influenced the lives and minds of thousands of young Black women. These two fiestas are related to one another in very special ways involving both religious practices and their respective pre-Hispanic origins. A mixture of secular and sacred, patron saint fiestas are multi-day affairs that include many events, ritual specialists, and performers, with the participation of the entire community. Fiestas take place in order to honor the saints, and they are the occasion for religious ceremonies, processions, musical performances, dances, and dance dramas. In Gesture and Power Yolanda Covington-Ward examines the everyday embodied practices and performances of the BisiKongo people of the Lower Congo to show how their gestures, dances, and spirituality are critical in mobilizing social and political action. Conceiving of the body as the center of analysis, a catalyst for social action, and as a conduit for the social construction of reality, Covington-Ward focuses on specific flash points in the last ninety years of Congo's troubled history, when embodied performance was used to stake political claims, foster dissent, and enforce power. In the 1920s Simon Kimbangu started a Christian prophetic movement based on spirit-induced trembling, which swept through the Lower Congo, subverting Belgian colonial authority. Following independence, dictator Mobutu Sese Seko required citizens to dance and sing nationalist songs daily as a means of maintaining political control. More recently, embodied performance has again stoked reform, as nationalist groups such as Bundu dia Kongo advocate for a return to precolonial religious practices and non-Western gestures such as traditional greetings. In exploring these embodied expressions of Congolese agency, Covington-Ward provides a framework for understanding how embodied practices transmit social values, identities, and cultural history throughout Africa and the diaspora.

Life has a way of taking us on many different twists and turns. Some of those are wanted while others are undesirable and unexpected. Positioning yourself to ask God “Why?” is quite reasonable when you can’t seem to understand why God would allow a route in your life that you had no plans for. However, if you take the time to really analyze your life, you can see how, like a puzzle, every situation and circumstance, be it good or not so good, seem to somehow fit together. Romans 8:28 reminds us of the following: “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called. according to his purpose.” If you have God as the beginner and finisher of your faith, as mentioned in Hebrews 12:2, “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God,” you have an understanding that God is the ultimate potter. Sometimes we fall into the category of feeling like we can write our life plan and expect God to follow suit. During those times, Jeremiah 29:11 should serve as a reassurance that God is not only in control but has a specific plan for us: “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” InLadies, It’s Just a Piece of the Puzzle, I take you on my journey of life, lessons, laughter, tears, hope, and wisdom that I have gained.
