My dissertation has the purpose of examining U.S. Caribbean Latino/a texts for negotiations of race and place. I use aspects of critical race theory, ecocriticism theory, womanist theory, and educational theory, and synthesize them into a lens which I call critical race ecocriticism. The literary study explores how characters in the texts move into and out of different environments, how they negotiate their identities in different environments, and the characteristics they exhibit when successfully negotiating racial identity and survival in the environments.I explore the works of Julia Alvarez, Angie Cruz, Junot Diaz, Sandra Maria Esteves, Evelio Grillo, Tato Laviera, Achy Obejas, Judith Ortiz Cofer, Loida Maritza, Perez, Pedro Pietri, Willie Perdomo, Esmeralda Santiago, and Piri Thomas. Grillo's work shows that U.S. Caribbean Latinos/as have had to identify as African American in order to survive, Thomas' work shows that friendships with African Americans has facilitated racial negotiation, and the later work of Loida Martiza Perez, Julia Alvarez and Sandra Maria Esteves shows Latino/a acceptance of a varied racial heritage, despite community members who still deny African ancestry. All the works demonstrate that White Latinos/as find themselves in less environmentally hazardous places than their Black or mixed race Latino/a counterparts.I use the information gathered to develop a lesson plan/unit that can be used in high school or college-level classrooms. The unit is designed to encourage mutual learning by teachers and students, as it is a student-centered approach to learning that allows students to pull from their own funds of knowledge.

ACOSTA is a story about the entire Acosta family, but especially about Oscar Acosta, the feisty pitching coach who first turned around the Chicago Cubs and then the Texas Rangers followed by a minors Yankees team, before dying in an auto accident in the Dominican at age 49. The parents of Oscar and his sister Yolanda were immigrants who came to the U.S. from Mexico to work on other people's ranches in southeastern New Mexico. That Oscar, who everyone assumed would follow in his father's footsteps, should be discovered in high school and make his way up the ranks in professional baseball is a fascinating story in itself. But in addition to a central thread about Oscar, there is also the story of his father, who, after years of poverty, succumbed to a temptation that would have shattered a less loving family, and Yolanda, who chose to forgive the perpetrator of a heinous crime in order to avoid a lifetime of negativity and despair.

Reflexiones is an annual review of the work in progress of scholars affiliated with the Center for Mexican American Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. It may also include outside works derived from center-sponsored presentations. Reflexiones 1998, the second volume in the series, invites us to view Mexican American identity in a new light. In the rich interdisciplinary tradition of Mexican American studies, the contributors to Reflexiones 1998 come from a variety of fields. She lived most of her adult life in Houston, Texas, where she was born. The life story of this Chicana icon encompasses a 60-year singing career that began with the dawn of the recording industry in the 1920s and continued well into the 1980s, ceasing only after she suffered a devastating stroke. Her status as a working-class idol continues to this day, making her one of the most prominent and long-standing performers in the history of the recording industry and a champion of Chicana/o music. This bilingual edition presents Lydia Mendoza's historia in an interview between the artist and Yolanda Broyles-González: first is the English translation, then the Spanish original, as told by Mendoza herself. One day, I picked up a journal I kept while touring around the world with the internationally-renowned Mario Bauza Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra. What wonderful visual memories the diary evoked for me! Friends and family who read my words and flipped through the colorful photographs claimed they felt as if they had traveled with us. I wanted to share my experiences with the public in hopes of bringing them inside the orchestra of this great bandleader while educating them on the highly-contagious music and the people who made it. This inside view is unique, because I traveled with the band as a performeryes, I sing and dance tooand as a personal friend of Mario and the dynamic vocalist, Graciela. I listened carefully to their very detailed recollections, because their stories were not only entertainment for today, but the history of a lifetime. Both well into their 70s when I first met them, the performers demonstrated exceptional recall as they shared their captivating experiences. I know there is an audience for this informationwhether readers are music fans, Hispanic immigrants, photography buffs or travel bugs.
