They conclude with his thoughts, on the eve of the domestic upheavals which saw the fall of the LDP, on the prospects for a third 'opening' of Japan to rival the Meiji Restoration and the MacArthur reforms. Now an adviser to a younger generation of politicians, he is regarded by many as a modern-day Genro for Japan.

DB2® 10 for z/OS can reduce the total DB2 CPU demand from 5-20%, compared to DB2 9, when you take advantage of all the enhancements. Many CPU reductions are built in directly to DB2, requiring no application changes. Some enhancements are implemented through normal DB2 activities through rebinding, restructuring database definitions, improving applications, and utility processing. The CPU demand reduction features have the potential to provide significant total cost of ownership savings based on the application mix and transaction types. Improvements in optimization reduce costs by processing SQL automatically with more efficient data access paths. Improvements through a range-list index scan access method, list prefetch for IN-list, more parallelism for select and index insert processing, better work file usage, better record identifier (RID) pool overflow management, improved sequential detection, faster log I/O, access path certainty evaluation for static SQL, and improved distributed data facility (DDF) transaction flow all provide more efficiency without changes to applications. These enhancements can reduce total CPU enterprise costs because of improved efficiency in the DB2 10 for z/OS. DB2 10 includes numerous performance enhancements for Large Objects (LOBs) that save disk space for small LOBs and that provide dramatically better performance for LOB retrieval, inserts, load, and import/export using DB2 utilities. DB210 can also more effectively REORG partitions that contain LOBs. This IBM Redbooks® publication® provides an overview of the performance impact of DB2 10 for z/OS discussing the overall performance and possible impacts when moving from version to version. We include performance measurements that were made in the laboratory and provide some estimates. Keep in mind that your results are likely to vary, as the conditions and work will differ. It also examines the role of the central Ministry of Education and the local boards in administering education throughout the country, and outlines and assesses the government's recent programs of educational reform. The behavior, attitudes and expectations of pupils and parents are discussed in detail, and placed within their political, social and historical context, revealing the complex cultural assumptions determining learning and socialization in Japan. This study thus contributes to the efforts of educators and sociologists to understand and evaluate different approaches to education in diverse cultures, increasingly important in the global information age. It shows how the American and Japanese education systems are based on fundamentally different concepts of society: democratic individualism and hierarchic collectivism respectively. In the summer of 1876, Mark Twain started to write Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as a detective novel surrounding the murder of Huck’s father, Pap Finn. The case is unresolved in the novel as it exists today, but Twain had already planted the clue to the identity of the killer. It is not the various objects ostentatiously left around Pap’s naked body; they are not the foreground of the scene, but actually the background, against which a peculiar absence emerges distinctively—Pap’s boots, with a "cross" in one of the heels, are gone with his murderer. The key to the mystery of Twain’s writings, as this book contends from a broader perspective, is also such an absence. Twain’s persistent reticence about the death of his father, especially the autopsy performed on his naked body, is a crucial clue to understanding his works. It reveals not only the reason why he aborted his vision of Huckleberry Finn as a detective novel, but also why, despite numerous undertakings, he failed to become a master of detective fiction.

In Black Freedom, White Resistance, and Red Menace, Yasuhiro Katagiri offers the first scholarly work to illuminate an important but largely unstudied aspect of U.S. civil rights history -- the collaborative and mutually beneficial relationship between professional anti-Communists in the North and segregationist politicians in the South. In 1954, the Supreme Court outlawed racial segregation in public schools with the Brown v. Board of Education ruling. Soon after -- while the political demise of U.S. senator Joseph R. McCarthy unfolded -- northern anti-Communists looked to the South as a promising new territory in which they could expand their support base and continue their cause. Southern segregationists embraced the assistance, and the methods, of these Yankee collaborators, and utilized the "northern messiahs" in executing a massive resistance to the Supreme Court's desegregation decrees and the civil rights movement in general. Southern white leadership framed black southerners' crusades for social justice and human dignity as a foreign scheme directed by nefarious outside agitators, "race-mixers," and, worse, outright subversives and card-carrying Communists. Based on years of extensive archival research, Black Freedom, White Resistance, and Red Menace explains how a southern version of McCarthyism became part of the opposition to the civil rights movement in the South, an analysis that leads us to a deeper understanding and appreciation for what the freedom movement -- and those who struggled for equality -- fought to overcome.
