This book is a diary of Yamamoto Asako (pen name of Aoki Hisa) from the time of the outbreak of the war between the United States and Japan, her confinement at Santa Anita, and time at Gila Relocation Center, until her selection as a passenger on the Gripsholm for the second wartime exchange of nationals between the United States and Japan. She was living in Los Angeles when WWII broke out.
The study of dusty plasmas is now in a vigorous state of development. Dust and plasma coexist in a vast variety of cosmic environments and their research received a major boost in the early 80's with the Voyager spacecraft observations of peculiar features in the Saturnian ring system (e.g. the radial spokes) which could not be explained purely in gravitational terms. In addition, dust streams were measured by the Galileo spacecraft in the Jovian magnetosphere and charged dust in the earth's mesosphere was detected by a direct rocket experiment. Since then the area has greatly expanded with dedicated laboratory experiments verifying aspects of basic physics of charged dust grains in plasmas.These proceedings contain invited and poster papers which were presented by scientists active in the field from more than twenty countries. The material contains new aspects of collective interactions in dusty plasmas. For example, discoveries of dust-acoustic Mach cones, dust ion-acoustic shocks, great dust voids, vortex formation, dust crystallization under microgravity, coexistence of positive negative dust grains in the mesosphere and dust in tokamaks. The more theoretical and simulation studies focus on dynamical and structural properties and kinetic theories of strongly coupled dusty plasmas, as well as on self-organizations and structures, in addition to identifying forces (viz. wakefields, electrostatic and dipolar interactions etc.), which are responsible for charged dust grain attraction and phase transitions.The resulting book is a valuable, state-of-the-art review of the field of dusty plasma physics and will be welcomed by both researchers and graduate students who want to keep up to date in this rapidly growing field.
Nuclear fusion is a process in which two nuclei join, forming a larger nucleus and releasing or absorbing energy. Nuclear fusion as an energy source has several advantages: It is vast, new source of energy; Fuels are plentiful; Inherently safe since any malfunction results in a rapid shutdown; No atmospheric pollution leading to acid rain or "greenhouse" effect; Radioactivity of the reactor structure, caused by the neutrons, decays rapidly and can be minimised by careful selection of low-activation materials. Provision for geological time-span disposal is not needed. This book brings together leading research in this field which will play a major role in the 21st century.
This dissertation explores issues of race, class, criminality, and ethnic identity in the Japanese community in Hawai'i from the arrival of the first Japanese migrants in 1886 through World War II and its immediate aftermath. It traces the development of anti-Japanese sentiment in Hawai'i, which culminated in the institution of martial law, the internment of nearly 1,500 individuals in Hawai'i, and the forced repatriation to Japan of certain allegedly disloyal members of the Japanese community during World War II. This study investigates the growing fears of the Japanese due to the large number of Japanese in the islands, due to Japan's militaristic activities in the Pacific, and due to the perceived threat posed by Hawai'i's Japanese in the event of war. This dissertation specifically focuses on a series of crimes that reflected ethnic fears among white elites in the islands and among American military officials concerning Hawai'i's Japanese population: the 1889 lynching of Katsu Goto, the bombing of Juzaburo Sakamaki's home in 1920, the 1928 Jamieson murder, and the 1932 Massie rape. The two largest labor strikes in Hawai'i in 1909 and 1920 likewise involving Japanese intensified white fears and illustrated the precarious economic position occupied by white planters who depended on Japanese labor. The white power structure that dominated local politics and the American military establishment in Hawai'i shared similar interests and aligned in order to control the Japanese in the islands, first through a dual-system of justice that privileged whites at the expense of ethnic minorities and later through the full-scale institution of martial law during the war. This analysis relies in many respects on close-readings of Hawai'i's major newspapers in order to assess the media's role in the construction of a contested Japanese identity and in the establishment of an official narrative of Japanese criminality, disloyalty, and threat. Whites and Japanese frequently clashed over issues of race and power, and the divide between rulers and ruled was often contested and never clearly defined. The period prior to World War II was marked by strife and tension between these groups, culminating in martial law, internment, and ultimately repatriation.
Since 1970 several volumes of the Landolt-Börnstein New Series have appeared which are devoted to, or at least include, the magnetic properties of some special groups of substances. Volume 19 of Group III (Crystal and Solid State Physics) deals with the magnetic properties of metals, alloys and metallic compounds containing at least one transition element. The amount of information available has become so substantial that several subvolumes are needed to cover it all. The first subvolumes deal with the intrinsic magnetic properties, i. e. those magnetic properties which depend only on the chemical composition and the crystal structure. Data on the properties which also depend on the preparation of the samples measured, as for instance, thin films or amorphous alloys and the magnetic alloys used in technical applications, will be compiled in the last subvolumes of the series. The first subvolume, III/19 a, appeared in 1986. It covers the magnetic properties of metals and alloys of the 3d, 4d and 5d transition elements. The second subvolume, III/19 b (1987), covers the magnetic properties of the binary metallic alloys and compounds of 3d transition elements with the elements of group 1B, 2B and 3B of the Periodic System. The present subvolume III/19 c completes the survey of the magnetic data of the metallic compounds of d transition-elements with elements of the main groups of the Periodic System of the elements. The major groups of ternary compounds, i. e. the Heusler alloys and the compounds with perovskite structure, are being treated in separate chapters.
