It compares four writing datasets from three groups of student writers (e.g., English-speaking students’ English texts, Chinese-speaking students’ Chinese texts, and both English and Chinese texts produced by the same group of Chinese-speaking students majoring in English), and applies the appraisal framework, an analytical tool developed in the field of Systemic Functional Linguistics. The book provides a nuanced view of the deployment of attitudinal patterns and the linguistic resources used for attitudinal evaluation in Chinese students’ English writing. Accordingly, it offers a valuable resource for all those interested in second language writing, contrastive rhetoric, second language acquisition and systemic functional linguistics.

This book reports on the findings of a series of studies on the development of zero-to-three-year-old Chinese children supported by the Fundamental Research Funds for the Central Universities. The studies were conducted by a research group at the Institute of Early Childhood Education, Beijing Normal University. In the first part of the book, findings concerning the developmental trajectory are presented, including physical and motor development, cognitive development, language development, social and emotional development. The focus of the second part is on the effect of family environment and practices. Specifically, the authors provide empirical evidence allowing readers to better understand how the home environment and educational practice in the family impact the psychological development of children in their early years. In the last part, culture-specific issues like the new universal two-child policy in China are discussed. Most of the parts are based on large-scale investigations and analysis of the status quo, complemented by small-sample studies and case studies. The findings presented here will promote theory building and public understanding of early care and education in China. Moreover, the behavior observation scales and assessment tools developed by the research group are cultural appropriate and may serve as a foundation for further studies on early care and education in the Chinese cultural context.

Since the late 1980s, green consumerism has been hailed in the West as an efficient solution to environmental problems. However, Chinese consumers have been slow to warm up to eco-friendly products. Consumers prefer SUVs to hybrid cars, health supplements and snake oil medicines to organic foods and eco-fashion is still secluded in high-end designer studios. These choices contradict the findings of many sustainable lifestyle surveys that claim to register a rising desire for green products among the Chinese. This book examines the psycho-cultural differences that disrupt the translation of "eco-friendly" appeals to China by analyzing environmental advertising. It explores the different notions of "green", the structures of desire that underlies the advertisements, and how they are shaped by ideological, cultural, and historical differences. Rather than arguing the superiority of the American or Chinese version of green consumerism, the book interrogates the role of advertising in the global spread of Western ideologies and explores the possibilities for consumers to resist transnational corporate hegemony in the green movement. This book fills an important gap in the critical scholarship on green marketing and should be of interest to students and scholars of environment studies, green advertising and marketing, environmental communication and media studies, China studies and environmental sociology, ethics and cultural studies.

This book discusses the significance of flexible scripting to structure CSCL against the framework of “Script theory of guidance” and reports on findings from two empirical studies on the effects of flexible scripting on collaboration in CSCL scenarios. In the first empirical study flexibility was accomplished through adaptivity, and through adaptability in the second. The results of these studies show that adaptive and adaptable scripts enhanced the quality of collaborative knowledge construction processes as well as learners’ collaboration skills, compared to inflexible scripts. The findings presented in this book will contribute to theory building of the scripting approach in CSCL. The authors propose two innovative ways of achieving flexible scripting and address the mechanisms by which adaptive versus adaptable script influences collaborative knowledge construction. Moreover, the adaptive and adaptable scripting approaches provide hands-on examples for practitioners and contribute to their understanding of teaching design in CSCL settings.

A Neurolinguistic Course for English Learners is the first ever book written about Neurolinguistic Programs (NLP) for college students in China and possibly in the world. As an NLP innovator and program developer, I have developed this text book to enhance the skills of English acquisition through the use of NLP programs and skills. The text book and course include reading, writing, listening, comprehending and speaking English skills. Students who complete the course with a certified NLP trainer, will complete the Practitioner Level of certification. Skills presented in the book include but are not limited to the core process, Circle of Excellence, TOTE model, Logical Level Alignment, Eye Accessing Cues, the Meta Model and more. Native of Idaho in the USA, Prof. Debrah Roundy graduated from the University of Idaho with a M.Ed. and from NLPU as an NLP Master Trainer and Consultant (2009) and a facilitator and transformational entrepreneur (2014). She has been a teacher, special education teacher, a developmental specialist, a school consultant and a Neurolinguist teacher, developer and coach. Her research interest is curriculum development and she created much of the curriculum used in her classroom. She has written a book on Neurolinguistic Programs for special needs and elementary school children called "NLP 4 Me!." Debrah currently works at Tongji University as a Foreign Language Expert with BYU China Teacher's Program in Shanghai, China and as such is titled a professor as an honorary title. Debrah is the first person as far as we know who has brought NLP to college students in China and the first person who has used NLP as a way to acquire and enhance English Speaking skills. Dr. Xinghua Liu works as a Lecturer in Applied Linguistics at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China and is the Chief Editor of TESOL International Journal (www.tesol-international.com). His research interests include second language writing, corpus linguistics and systemic functional linguistics.
