Focusing on the poetry and cultural practice of Frank O’Hara, the great urban poet of the New York School during the 1950s and 1960s, this books explores the interwoven relationship between his urban poetics and the urban culture of New York, seeking to shed light on poetic concept and its cultural relevance. The poetry of Frank O’Hara is deeply rooted in and nourished by his urban experience as a metropolitan and an active participant in the vibrant cultural scene of New York. Therefore, an investigation into the interactive dynamics between his poetry and the urban culture he helped shape serves as a starting point for further study on the literary representation of European and American urban culture. Across eight chapters, the authors look into the genesis, theoretical constitution, the interface with culture and aesthetics of O’Hara’s urban poetics and also their philosophical foundations, literary ethics, special expression and representation as well as his reception of modernity and postmodernity. The title will appeal to scholars, students and general readers interested in American literature, poetry and urban culture, especially Frank O’Hara and the New York School.

As a distinctive syntactic structure in Mandarin Chinese, the Patient-Subject Construction (PSC) is one of the most interesting but least well-understood structures in the language. This book offers a comprehensive account of the history, structure, meaning and use of the PSC. Unlike previous descriptions which were framed in terms of pre-existing grammatical notions such as ‘topicalization’, ‘passivization’ and ‘ergativization’, this book offers a fresh look at the PSC, in which its syntactic and semantic as well as its discourse functions are examined within the system of major construction-types of the language as a whole. The PSC, being low in transitivity, serves primarily the function of backgrounding in discourse. Typologically, the PSC bears a resemblance to middle constructions in Indo-European and other languages, raising interesting questions about ways to understand congruent and divergent syntactic structures across the world’s languages. This book will be of interest to students of Chinese Linguistics as well as Language Typology.
Intelligent Biomechatronics in Neurorehabilitation presents global research and advancements in intelligent biomechatronics and its applications in neurorehabilitation. The book covers our current understanding of coding mechanisms in the nervous system, from the cellular level, to the system level in the design of biological and robotic interfaces. As the aging population continues to grow, healthcare providers are faced with the challenge of developing long-term rehabilitation for neurological disorders, such as stroke, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Intelligent biomechatronics provide a seamless interface and real-time interactions with a biological system and the external environment, making them key to automation services. - Written by international experts in the rehabilitation and bioinstrumentation industries - Covers the current understanding of nervous system coding mechanisms, which are the basis for biological and robotic interfaces - Demonstrates and discusses robotic rehabilitation effectiveness and automatic evaluation
This book provides a comprehensive introduction on opinion analysis for online reviews. It offers the newest research on opinion mining, including theories, algorithms and datasets. A new feature presentation method is highlighted for sentiment classification. Then, a three-phase framework for sentiment classification is proposed, where a set of sentiment classifiers are selected automatically to make predictions. Such predictions are integrated via ensemble learning. Finally, to solve the problem of combination explosion encountered, a greedy algorithm is devised to select the base classifiers.
This unique compendium provides a novel research on how time influences the conversions of advertising and product recommendation in E-commerce. It proposes time-aware conversion prediction models to solve the problem — what products should be recommended for a given period to maximize conversion? The volume also presents a series of researches on how to build data-driven attribution models to allocate the time-sensitive contribution of advertisements to the conversion. This must-have reference text will be invaluable for researchers, professionals, academics and graduate students keen in databases and artificial intelligence.

With the rapid development of Chinese urbanization in the 21st century, "urban diseases" become more serious, mainly manifested in water environmental pollution, urban flooding, water shortage, and deterioration of water ecology. It is necessary to establish a modern rainwater management system, scientifically solve the problem of excess urban rainwater and to improve water environment quality. Improvement of water environment quality is conducive to the ecological function of a sponge city. Sponge city construction has contributed to control non-point source pollution. Sponge systems cause the stagnation and purification of rainwater runoff, which is an important guarantee for water environment quality. This monograph summarizes theories and practices of the integrated water environment treatment in Chongqing, a typical representative mountainous city in the Three Gorges Reservoir Region. Based on the mountainous terrain and unique water environment characteristics in the Three Gorges Reservoir Region, the monograph analyzes measures and difficulties in the basin water environment integrated treatment. Moreover, the monograph makes suggestions for risk management amid drainage systems during the COVID-19 epidemic.
Hangzhou is a very special city for Italian architects who want to learn about historical and contemporary architecture and about the urban challenges in contemporary China. There are further issues that we would like to investigate about Hangzhou in the future and in order to do that, it would be interesting to involve further experts such as archaeologists and hydrologists given the special presence of historical relics, water and several issues which still deserve a better enhancement.

This book enriches the evolving concept of soft power, and China’s approach to soft power, by considering how aspects of Chinese culture, notably the traditional martial art and health promoting exercise Tai Chi Quan, are being successfully promoted around the world by non-state actors, and how this fits alongside China’s state-sponsored soft power promotion. The book contrasts growing soft power promotion by China with the corresponding decline in such activities by Western states, outlines the growth of Tai Chi Quan societies worldwide and explores in detail why Tai Chi Quan appeals so strongly outside China. It shows how Tai Chi Quan introduces many people around the world to Chinese culture and builds links between people inside China and elsewhere in the world. It concludes that Tai Chi Quan achieves what soft power aims to achieve: a good image and long-term friendship.

This book analyses the implications of eco-urbanism re-making for policy and practice under the transformational trends of economic decentralization and market reform in China. While the guiding themes are space, scale, and governance of cities, the book focuses on three interrelated prevailing processes of local green space reproduction, cross-scale mediation of eco-city planning ideology and mobilized social-economic-political intricacies among different countries. This book addresses the ongoing global diffusion and diversification of sustainable urbanism discourses, debates and practices to portray, evaluate, remake and implement a sustainable form of urban development, using China as a national example. As eco-city practice becomes a city-branding instrument worldwide, this new urban development vision is also well embraced by Chinese local governments. In these contexts, the Chinese government has initiated and endorsed a number of massive projects to promote green urbanism, steering urbanization onto a more sustainable trajectory. The construction of these "ecotopias" involves a multitude of processes ranging from policy transfer/mobility to institutional design, from innovation in green technologies to the promotion of green buildings, and from policy implementation to public participation.
