Emerging in China in the early 1990s, Falun Gong is viewed by its supporters as a folk movement promoting the benefits of good health and moral cultivation. To the Chinese establishment, however, it is a dissident religious cult threatening political orthodoxy and national stability. The author, a Chinese national once involved in implementing Chinese cultural policies, examines the evolving relationship between Falun Gong and Chinese authorities in a revealing case study of the powerful public discourse between a pervasive political ideology and an alternative agenda in contention for cultural dominance. Posited as a cure for culturally bound illness with widespread symptoms, the Falun Gong movement's efficacy among the marginalized relies on its articulation of a struggle against government sanctioned exploitation in favor of idealistic moral aspirations. In countering such a position, the Chinese government alleges that the religious movement is based in superstition and pseudoscience. Aided by her insider perspective, the author deftly employs Western rhetorical methodology in a compelling critique of an Eastern rhetorical occurrence, highlighting how authority confronts challenge in postsocialist China.
Writing comments on student papers is a time-honored and widely accepted practice in writing classrooms in most countries. Teachers offer text-specific advice to each student and communicate to the student writer, among other things, the criteria of good writing. A close look at the teacher's comments, therefore, reveals the criteria with which teachers measure student papers. This study builds a dialogue between teachers of writing in China and America on what "good writing" is, revealing the fact that "good writing" resides not just with student texts, but with the teachers who read and judge student papers.
This volume of the Biographical Dictionary of Chinese Women completes the four-volume project and contains more than 400 biographies of women active in the Tang through Ming dynasties (618-1644). Many of the entries are the result of original research and provide the only substantial information on women available in English. Of note is the inclusion of a large number of women who reached positions of authority during this period as well as women artists and writers, especially poets, during this period of increased female literacy and more liberal social attitudes to women's cultural roles. Wherever possible, entries incorporate translations of poems and sometimes prose works so as to let the women speak for themselves. The book also includes a multitude of entertainers and actresses. The volume includes a Guide to Chinese Words Used, a Chronology of Dynasties and Major Rulers, a Finding List by Background or Fields of Endeavor, and a Glossary of Chinese Names. It will prove to be a useful tool for research and teaching.
Firstly, it was the crown prince and Tong Ming, the sons and daughters of the current emperor's younger brother, Prince Jin. Isn't Thea the one who was taken away from Tangzhou a few days ago? He really was a Feng Shui treasure land, to hide a treasure, I heard Her Majesty loved it very much? As for the other woman, although she did not know who she was, she must have an extraordinary status since she was able to come to Tangzhou with those big figures. Moreover, judging from her elegant and pure complexion, she was either the daughter of an Imperial City official, or the crown prince or one of his servants.
As Su Qinghuan put her hands on her hips, she said, "With medical skills in hand, I have all the skills in the world!" What? You're accusing me of not marrying seventeen? No problem, buy a sickly guy, sit and wait to become a widow, earn a chastity memorial archway! However, with a change in his bearing, how did he become a powerful general? Su Qing Huan: Hey, hey, hey. You took the wrong script. This is Tian Wen! The female lead likes to take off the tease, kind-hearted and tough; the male lead is overbearing and affectionate, playing the pig to eat the tiger; Joy and tears, sorrow and joy, but deep love never let down.
Errors of Creativity presents an in-depth analysis of both the sources and characteristics of lexical errors committed by Chinese college students who major in English language. Using theories of the semantic field and componential analysis as the theoretical basis, Errors of Creativity gives new insight into the specific area of error analysis, as well as to the theory and practice of L2 acquisition.
Autophagy is involved in the resistance against anticancer treatment. Both autophagy inhibitors and inducers have been demonstrated to be effective in enhancing the effect of chemotherapy and irradiation in various anticancer regimes. Currently, autophagy inhibitors are being examined in clinical trials as an adjuvant for traditional therapies. However, caution must be exercised, considering the complexity of autophagy regulation in tumorigenesis and in development of therapeutic resistance. There is also evidence suggesting that targeting autophagy may not have the desired effects. We have found that cancer cells with long-term autophagy deficiency can evade the dependence on autophagy to survive. Furthermore, some tumors are intrinsically insensitive to autophagy manipulation. Although regulation of autophagy is a promising new addition to cancer therapy, careful evaluations must be exercised when applying this strategy in clinical practice on individual bases.
Electronic Structure Crystallography and Functional Motifs of Materials Detailed resource on the method of electronic structure crystallography for revealing the experimental electronic structure and structure-property relationships of functional materials Electronic Structure Crystallography and Functional Motifs of Materials describes electronic structure crystallography and functional motifs of materials, two of the most challenging topics to realize the rational design of high-performance functional materials, emphasizing the physical properties and structure-property relationships of functional materials using nonlinear optical materials as examples. The text clearly illustrates how to extract experimental electronic structure information and relevant physicochemical properties of materials based on the theories and methods in X-ray crystallography and quantum chemistry. Practical skills of charge density studies using experimental X-ray sources are also covered, which are particularly important for the future popularization and development of electron structure crystallography. This book also introduces the related theories and refinement techniques involved in using scattering methods (mainly X-ray single-crystal diffraction, as well as polarized neutron scattering and Compton scattering) to determine experimental electronic structures, including the experimental electron density, experimental electron wavefunction, and experimental electron density matrix of crystalline materials. Electronic Structure Crystallography and Functional Motifs of Materials includes information on: Basic framework and assumptions of the first-principle calculations, density matrix and density function, and Hartree-Fock (HF) and Kohn-Sham (KS) methods Analysis of topological atoms in molecules, chemical interaction analysis, coarse graining and energy partition of the density matrix, and restricted space partition Principles of electronic structure measurement, including thermal vibration analysis, scattering experiments, and refinement algorithm for experimental electronic structure Independent atom model, multipole model, X-ray constrained wavefunction model, and other electron density models Electronic Structure Crystallography and Functional Motifs of Materials is an ideal textbook or reference book for graduate students and researchers in chemistry, physics, and material sciences for studying the structures and properties of functional crystalline materials.
She ran into his arms on a mission, and from then on, he had a soft spot for her.Again and again, he forced her to walk to his side and hold her in "captivity" in his arms.Again and again, she ran, but when she had nowhere to run, he was still the best shield behind her.In the end, she asked in confusion, "Xiao Yunyi, why are you so good to me?"He stroked her hair and said gently, "Lan Xi, you are the most special and heartbreaking woman I have ever met.
Macroautophagy (referred to as autophagy) is a highly conserved intracellular process that involves sequestration of cytoplasmic contents by intracellular double-membrane vacuoles. In the adaptive immune system, autophagy is essential for antigen presentation, survival, and activation-induced proliferation of T lymphocytes. Autophagy-related proteins, such as Atg5, Atg7, and LC3, are expressed in T lymphocytes. The basal level of autophagy occurs in resting T lymphocytes, and is enhanced in activated T cells. Both our own and other groups’ data show that the autophagy-related gene Atg5 is critical for T cell development, survival, and function. The mitochondrial content of Atg5-deficient naïve T lymphocytes is abnormally high, which leads to defective survival. These findings suggest that autophagy is critical for promoting T lymphocyte survival by regulating intracellular organelle homeostasis.
Two English-Language Translators of Jin Ping Mei examines English translations of the Ming novel Jin Ping Mei by translators from different historical periods within the Anglophone world. Drawing upon theoretical insights from translation studies, literary criticism, and cultural studies, the book explores the treatment of salient features of the novel in translation, including cultural representation, narratological elements, gender-specific motifs, and (homo)sexual themes. Through literary re-imagining and artistic re-creation, Egerton transforms a complex and sprawling narrative into a popular modern middlebrow novel, making it readily accessible within Western genres. Roy’s interlinear and annotated translation transcends the mere retelling of a vivid story for its unwavering emphasis on every single detail of the original, becoming a portal to the Ming past. It stands as a testament to the significance of translation as a medium for understanding the legacy of the late Ming and the socio-cultural dynamics shaping that period in Chinese history. This book will be a useful reference for scholars and research students within the fields of literary translation studies and translated Chinese literature, particularly Ming- Qing fiction. The book will also appeal to students and researchers studying Jin Ping Mei’s translation and reception in the West.

This book gives a detailed description on mathematical theory of elasticity and generalized dynamics of solid quasicrystals and its applications. The Chinese edition of the book Mathematical Theory of Elasticity of Quasicrystals and Its Applications was published by the Beijing Institute of Technology Press in 1999, written by Prof Tian-You Fan. In this English edition of the book, the phonon-phason dynamics, defect dynamics and hydrodynamics of solid quasicrystals are included, so the scope of the book is beyond elasticity. Hence, the title in this edition is changed to Mathematical Theory of Elasticity and Generalized Dynamics of Quasicrystals and Its Applications. This book is the first and only monograph in the scope of quasicrystals since first published in 1999 in China and worldwide. In this edition, the two-dimensional quasicrystals of second kind, soft-matter quasicrystals and photonic bade-gap and application of photonic quasicrystals are added. This book combines the mechanical and physical behavior of quasicrystals and mathematical physics, which may help graduate students and researchers in the fields of new materials, condensed matter physics, applied mathematics and engineering science.
The book takes the effect of Protestant Ethics on the spirit of "rational" capitalism, which proposed by Max Weber in his book "Protestant Ethics and the spirit of capitalism", as the main line, and makes a further comparative analysis and demonstration of the relationship between Protestant Ethics and market economy by setting forth background, historical development, core idea and cultural resource of "rational" capitalism, and comparison with China's market economy and private capital. Meanwhile, by recognizing essential conditions and factors of rational market economy, makes a deeply analysis on the reason why private capital in Chinese history failed for the formation of rational capitalism, and moreover, the gap for private capital in modern China in forming rational market economy.
