Deals with the broad field of pediatric and adolescent oncology and stem cell transplantation. This book introduces the topic with information regarding epidemiology, genetics, incidence, and risk.
This book presents insights on Singapore's politics and governance from leading thinkers, based on selected commentaries from Singapore Perspectives conference series co-published by Institute of Policy Studies and World Scientific. Contributed by the who's who of Singapore's government, business and academia circles, they provide diverse viewpoints over state-society relations, governing principles, electoral politics, foreign policy, among other important issues. Will consensus or contest secure Singapore's future? Should pragmatism be retained as Singapore's governing philosophy? What if the nation-state is no longer the key organisational unit of the international community? What if Singapore has to choose between China and the United States? What if Singapore becomes a two- or multi-party system? This volume explores a range of possible answers to these questions and more." -- Back cover.
This textbook, serving an important tool for worldwide practitioners who specialize in the maternal and child health (MCH) field as well as public health, addresses the most common perinatal and neonatal conditions. Exploring a broad spectrum of the field, topics such as epidemiology and practical management guidelines based on evidence-based information or consensus recommendations by specialty societies are covered extensively. The textbook focuses on providing evidence-based recommendations coupled with practical applications in a systematic approach which will benefit both practitioners and student learners of MCH. An Evidence-Based Approach to Clinical Management in Maternal and Child Health is a comprehensive resource reference for graduate students, practitioners and academics, with additional CD-ROM materials such as pull-outs flow sheets, sample tracking tools, sample review materials, reference materials, and an introductory section on developing community-based maternal and child health programs in regions with low and poor resources.
This unique book explores the definition, sources and role of randomness. A joyful discussion with many non-mathematical and mathematical examples leads to the identification of three sources of randomness: randomness due to irreversibility which inhibits us from extracting whatever rules may underlie a process, randomness due to our inability to have infinite power (chaos), and randomness due to many interacting systems. Here, all sources are found to have something in common: infinity. The discussion then moves to the physical system (our universe). Through the quantum mechanical character of small scales, the second law of thermodynamics and chaos, randomness is shown to be an intrinsic property of nature - this is consistent with the three sources of randomness identified above. Finally, an explanation is given as to why rules and randomness cannot exist by themselves, but instead have to coexist. Many examples are presented, ranging from pure mathematical to natural and social processes, that clearly demonstrate how the combination of rules and randomness produces the world we live in.
This book is the first of its kind to devote itself at this level to the key role played by light and electromagnetic radiation in the universe. Readers are introduced to philosophical hypotheses such as the economy, symmetry, and universality of natural laws, and are then guided to practical consequences such as the rules of geometrical optics and even Einstein's well-known but mysterious relationship, E = mc2. Most chapters feature a pen picture of the life and character of a relevant scientific figure. These "Historical Interludes" include, among others, Galileo's conflicts with the Inquisition, Fourier's taunting of the guillotine, Neils Bohr and World War II, and the unique character of Richard Feynman.
This is an original and wide-ranging account of the careers of a close-knit group of highly influential ecologists working in Britain from the late 1960s onwards. The book can also be read as a history of some recent developments in ecology. One of the group, Robert May, is a past president of the Royal Society, and the author of what many see as the most important treatise in theoretical ecology of the later twentieth century. That the group flourished was due not only to May's intellectual leadership, but also to the guiding hand of T. R. E. Southwood. Southwood ended his career as Linacre Professor of Zoology at the University of Oxford, where he also served a term as Vice-Chancellor. Earlier, as a professor and director of the Silwood Park campus of Imperial College London, he brought the group together. Since it began to coalesce at Silwood it has been named here the Silwood Circle. Southwood promoted the interests of its members with the larger aim of raising the profile of ecological and environmental science in Britain. Given public anxiety over the environment and the loss of ecosystems, his actions were well-timed.Ecology, which had been on the scientific margins in the first half of the twentieth century, came to be viewed as a science central to modern existence. The book illustrates its importance to many areas. Members of the Silwood Circle have acted as government advisors in the areas of conservation and biodiversity, resource management, pest control, food policy, genetically modified crops, sustainable agriculture, international development, defence against biological weapons, and epidemiology and infectious disease control. In recounting the science they carried out, and how they made their careers, the book reflects also on the role of the group, and the nature of scientific success.
Solid state ionics is a multidisciplinary scientific and industrial field dealing with ionic transport phenomena in solids. In a couple of decades, solid state ionics has become one of the largest disciplines closely related to energy technologies, such as batteries, fuel cells, and so on. So far, a large number of scientists and engineers in Asia as well as in Europe and US are engaged in the research in solid state ionics. In the context of such a situation, the Asian Society for Solid State Ionics was founded in 1986, and a series of academic conferences has been held biennially since 1988. In 2012, the 13th conference is organized in Sendai, Japan. This book provides research papers describing the latest developments and findings in the field of solid state ionics. The selected contributions from prominent researchers in the Asian Society for Solid State Ionics, which are presented at the 13th Asian Conference on Solid State Ionics, can be found. The papers in this book are detailed and suitable to understand recent research trends in solid state ionics, and thus will be a valuable resource for physicists, chemists, and material scientists. Plant molecular biology came to the fore in the early 1980s and there has been tremendous growth in the subject since then. The study of plant genes and genomes and the development of techniques for the incorporation of novel or modified genes into plants eventually led to the commercialisation of genetically modified (GM) crops in the mid-1990s. This was seen as the start of a biotechnological revolution in plant breeding. However, plant biotechnology has become one of the hottest debates of the age and, in Europe at least, one of the greatest challenges that plant scientists have ever faced. This book covers the history and development of the science and techniques that underpin plant biotechnology. It describes the GM crops that are or have been grown commercially around the world, including failures as well as successes, and the new varieties that are being developed. The safety record of GM crops is reviewed together with the legislation that has been adopted to cover their use. The book also deals with the concerns of consumers, the GM crop debate and the prospects for the technology. In the second edition, sections on current GM crops and future developments in plant biotechnology have been greatly expanded, while those on techniques, legislation and the GM crop debate have also been updated. The book is a concise, comprehensive and readable study that is accessible to a general readership with a scientific background but also provides useful information for the specialist.
The year 2007 marked not only the centenary of Imperial College London but also the 50th anniversary of the late Nobel Laureate Professor Abdus Salam's arrival at the College. Accordingly, a conference entitled OC Salam + 50OCO organized by the Theoretical Physics Group was held at Imperial College on 7 July 2007.Many distinguished guests attended and paid their respects to the great man. Their contributions recorded in these proceedings are divided into three sections, designed to reflect the three dimensions of Salam's character: 1) Salam the Scientist, 2) Salam the Humanitarian, and 3) Salam the Man.
This book brings together, for the first time, the results of recent research in areas ranging from the chemistry of cold interstellar clouds (10-20 K), through laboratory studies of the spectroscopy and kinetics of ions, radicals and molecules, to studies of molecules in liquid helium droplets, to attempts to create molecular (as distinct from atomic) Bose-Einstein condensates.
In 1934, G. H. Hardy et al. published a book entitled Inequalities, in which a few theorems about Hilbert-type inequalities with homogeneous kernels of degree-one were considered. Since then, the theory of Hilbert-type discrete and integral inequalities is almost built by Prof. Bicheng Yang in their four published books. This monograph deals with half-discrete Hilbert-type inequalities. By means of building the theory of discrete and integral Hilbert-type inequalities, and applying the technique of Real Analysis and Summation Theory, some kinds of half-discrete Hilbert-type inequalities with the general homogeneous kernels and non-homogeneous kernels are built. The relating best possible constant factors are all obtained and proved. The equivalent forms, operator expressions and some kinds of reverses with the best constant factors are given. We also consider some multi-dimensional extensions and two kinds of multiple inequalities with parameters and variables, which are some extensions of the two-dimensional cases. As applications, a large number of examples with particular kernels are also discussed. The authors have been successful in applying Hilbert-type discrete and integral inequalities to the topic of half-discrete inequalities. The lemmas and theorems in this book provide an extensive account of these kinds of inequalities and operators. This book can help many readers make good progress in research on Hilbert-type inequalities and their applications.Contents: Recent Developments of Hilbert-Type Inequalities with ApplicationsImprovements of the Euler-Maclaurin Summation Formula and ApplicationsA Half-Discrete Hilbert-Type Inequality with a General Homogeneous KernelA Half-Discrete Hilbert-Type Inequality with a Non-Homogeneous KernelMulti-dimensional Half-Discrete Hilbert-Type InequalitiesMultiple Half-Discrete Hilbert-Type Inequalities Readership: Graduate students and professional researchers in mathematics.
