This atlas is aimed at collecting, compiling and desseminating information on mental health resources in the world. It presents updated and expanded information from 192 countries with analyses of global and regional trends as well as individual country profiles. Newly included in this volume is a section on epidemiology within the profiles of all low and middle income countries. It shows that mental health resources within most countries remain inadequate despite modest improvments since 2001. Availability of mental health resources across countries and between regions remains substantially uneven, with many countries having few resources. The atlas reinforces the urgent need to enhance mental health resources within countries.

The objective of this guideline is to present the complete set of all WHO recommendations and best practice statements relating to abortion. While legal, regulatory, policy and service-delivery contexts may vary from country to country, the recommendations and best practices described in this document aim to enable evidence-based decision-making with respect to quality abortion care. This guideline updates and replaces the recommendations in all previous WHO guidelines on abortion care.
This collaborative ATLAS project is a systematic attempt to collect information from countries around the world on existing services and resources relating to child and adolescent mental health services. The primary purposes of this initial report are to stimulate additional data gathering and to encourage the development of policy, services and training. Issues discussed include: methods and limitations of the project, rights of the child and adolescent, policy and programmes, information systems, service system gaps and service integration, barriers to care, care providers, training and financing of care services, availability and use of medication.

Early Adolescent Skills for Emotions (EASE) is an evidence-based group psychological intervention to help 10–15-year-olds affected by internalizing problems (e.g. stress and symptoms of anxiety, depression) in communities exposed to adversity. Published by the World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), EASE aims to support adolescents and their caregivers with skills to reduce distress. The intervention consists of 7 group sessions for adolescents and 3 additional group sessions for their caregivers. It is based on adapted aspects from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and has been designed to be suitable for delivery by trained and supervised non-specialist helpers. The EASE intervention manual is accompanied by four additional documents to support its delivery. An explicit mental health policy is an essential and powerful tool for a mental health section in a ministry of health. When properly formulated and implemented through plans and programs, policy can have a significant impact on the mental health of populations. Mental health conditions are prevalent and often develop early in life. Yet very few of the world’s children and young people receive the mental health services they need. There is no single best model for organizing mental health services that applies to all contexts. But every country, no matter its resource constraints, can take steps to improve the design and strengthen the delivery of mental health services for children and young people This document is designed to inform and inspire policy makers and others responsible for mental health services for children and young people, through introducing key issues to consider, important domains for standards of mental health care and by sharing a broad range of good practice approaches to developing or re-orienting services at community level.
This book is the product of a multinational research project on "Gender, Alcohol and Culture: an International Study" (GENACIS). GENACIS is a major collaborative effort to highlight the relationship between gender and alcohol issues, seek greater understanding of male and female differences in patterns of drinking and alcohol problems, and assess the public health implications of drinking by men and women. Each of the eight country-specific chapters in this volume (Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, India, Mexico, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Uganda) consists of a review of alcohol and alcohol policy in the country and an analysis of social and health problems associated with drinking. For several of the countries, this is the first systematic attempt to provide a broad insight into gender issues and how they relate to alcohol problems. In an era of growing consumption and increasing burden of alcohol-related problems in many developing countries, the findings reported in this book and the GENACIS project in general, are a major step forward in the understanding of the role of gender in alcohol behaviours.
