This book surveys and analyses the language of metaphor in the writings of such mystics as Richard Rolle, Walter Hilton, Julian of Norwich, and in such anonymous works as The Cloud of Unknowing and the Ancrene Wisse. The main emphasis of this comparative and stylistic study is not theological but rather the means by which theological concepts are communicated through language. The book sets the English mystics in perspective by establishing their place in the European mystical movement of the Middle Ages. It shows how intricate the relationship between English, and continental mysticism really is. The book suggests that there is clear links between English and German female mysticism, yet the mysticism is in the main due not so much to specific influences as to the common background of Christian theology and mysticism.

The book points out that there are two domains that follow naturally from the stance of embodiment: first, coordination dynamics is an established empirical paradigm that is best able to aid the approach; second, the obvious goal-directedness of intelligent action (i.e., intentionality) is nicely addressed in the framework of the dynamical synergetic approach.

The goal of this volume is to discuss the rapidly moving field of atom optics and interferometry with all its intricate aspects ranging from fundamental physics to applications and the theory of relativity. After an introduction to atom optics and Bose-Einstein condensation, the theoretical foundations of cold atom interferometers, their use to test gravity, and their implementation in laboratory measurements of the Earth rotation and of Newton's gravitational constant are discussed. Several papers discuss the characteristics of gyroscopes and interferometers as sensors for inertial forces, starting from gyroscopes based on light waves and comparing their sensitivity to those based on matter waves. The final topic is the variation of fundamental constants, a subject that during the last years has attracted a lot of attention from different communities of physics.

Wolfgang Riehle contends that recent scholarship has exaggerated theinfluence on Shakespeare of the native popular tradition, at theexpense of a full understanding of the importance that Roman, particularly Plautine, comedy would have had for an Elizabethan dramatist. Shakespeare is shown to have considered Plautus, as did the Renaissance humanists, a dramatist of great qualities from whom much could be learned. The study concentrates on Shakespeare's Comedy of Errorsand its two Plautine sources, the Menaechmi and Amphitruo. Riehle's approach reveals Shakespeare's relation to his sources and his idea of comedy in a new light. The later plays are examined in this context. Riehle also argues for the continuation in recognisable form of the New Comedy tradition throughout the middle ages and into the Renaissance.WOLFEGANG RIEHLE is Professor of English literature at Graz University; he studied English, German and Classical literature atTubingen, Durham and Munich.
