For many years, digital signal processing has been governed by the theory of Fourier transform and its numerical implementation. The main disadvantage of Fourier theory is the underlying assumption that the signals have time-wise or space-wise invariant statistical properties. In many applications the deviation from a stationary behavior is precisely the information to be extracted from the signals. Wavelets were developed to serve the purpose of analysing such instationary signals. The book gives an introduction to wavelet theory both in the continuous and the discrete case. After developing the theoretical fundament, typical examples of wavelet analysis in the Geosciences are presented. The book has developed from a graduate course held at The University of Calgary and is directed to graduate students who are interested in digital signal processing. The reader is assumed to have a mathematical background on the graduate level.

A biography of the man who lead the secret mission to kill Adolph Hitler and topple the Nazi regime, from an award-winning historian. On 20th July 1944, senior officers gathered at the Wolfschanze—the Wolf’s Lair—Hitler’s headquarters in East Prussia. Among them was Colonel Claus Schenk Count von Stauffenberg, chief of staff of the Reserve Army, and he carried a briefcase packed with explosives. This is his story. Shortly after midday the building was rocked by a massive explosion. Five men were killed, others wounded and the interior of the Wolfschanze was wrecked. Believing that he had killed the German Führer, von Stauffenberg set off for Berlin to initiate Operation Valkyrie—the coup d’etat to overthrow the Nazi regime. Hitler, of course, did not die that day and Stauffenberg and his coconspirators were rounded up and executed. But what motivated Stauffenberg to attempt such a mission? Was Stauffenberg a traitor or a patriot? After decades of analyzing the sources and eyewitness reports, the renowned historian Wolfgang Venohr revealed the true nature of the man behind the most audacious assassination attempt of the Second World War. Like many others, Stauffenberg smarted from Germany’s humiliating defeat in 1918 and the punishing terms of the Treaty of Versailles. Indeed, until the late 1930s, Stauffenberg agreed with much of the National Socialist ideology, which sought to reestablish Germany as the most powerful nation in Europe. This textbook offers a statistical view on the geometry of multiple view analysis, required for camera calibration and orientation and for geometric scene reconstruction based on geometric image features. The authors have backgrounds in geodesy and also long experience with development and research in computer vision, and this is the first book to present a joint approach from the converging fields of photogrammetry and computer vision. Part I of the book provides an introduction to estimation theory, covering aspects such as Bayesian estimation, variance components, and sequential estimation, with a focus on the statistically sound diagnostics of estimation results essential in vision metrology. Part II provides tools for 2D and 3D geometric reasoning using projective geometry. This includes oriented projective geometry and tools for statistically optimal estimation and test of geometric entities and transformations and their relations, tools that are useful also in the context of uncertain reasoning in point clouds. Part III is devoted to modelling the geometry of single and multiple cameras, addressing calibration and orientation, including statistical evaluation and reconstruction of corresponding scene features and surfaces based on geometric image features. The authors provide algorithms for various geometric computation problems in vision metrology, together with mathematical justifications and statistical analysis, thus enabling thorough evaluations. The chapters are self-contained with numerous figures and exercises, and they are supported by an appendix that explains the basic mathematical notation and a detailed index. The book can serve as the basis for undergraduate and graduate courses in photogrammetry, computer vision, and computer graphics. The book contains the only available complete presentation of the mode-coupling theory (MCT) of complex dynamics of glass-forming liquids, dense polymer melts, and colloidal suspensions. It describes in a self-contained manner the derivation of the MCT equations of motion and explains that the latter define a model for a statistical description of non-linear dynamics. It is shown that the equations of motion exhibit bifurcation singularities, which imply the evolution of dynamical scenarios different from those studied in other non-linear dynamics theories. The essence of the scenarios is explained by the asymptotic solution theory of the equations of motion. The leading-order results deal with scaling laws and the range of validity of these general laws is obtained by the derivation of the leading-correction results. Comparisons of numerical solutions of the MCT equations of motion with the analytic results of the asymptotic analysis demonstrate various facets of the MCT dynamics. Some comparisons of MCT results with data are used to show the relevance of MCT for the discussion of amorphous matter dynamics.

It was about 1985 when both of the authors started their work using multigrid methods for process simulation problems. This happened in dependent from each other, with a completely different background and different intentions in mind. At this time, some important monographs appeared or have been in preparation. There are the three "classical" ones, from our point of view: the so-called "1984 Guide" [12J by Brandt, the "Multi-Grid Methods and Applications" [49J by Hackbusch and the so-called "Fundamentals" [132J by Stiiben and Trottenberg. Stiiben and Trottenberg in [132J state a "delayed acceptance, resent ments" with respect to multigrid algorithms. They complain: "Nevertheless, even today's situation is still unsatisfactory in several respects. If this is true for the development of standard methods, it applies all the more to the area of really difficult, complex applications." In spite of all the above mentioned publications and without ignoring important theoretical and practical improvements of multigrid, this situa tion has not yet changed dramatically. This statement is made under the condition that a numerical principle like multigrid is "accepted", if there exist "professional" programs for research and production purposes. "Professional" in this context stands for "solving complex technical prob lems in an industrial environment by a large community of users". Such a use demands not only for fast solution methods but also requires a high robustness with respect to the physical parameters of the problem.
