The answers his rapid-fire questions elicit, which make less and less sense the deeper he probes, are just as ridiculous today as they were a century ago, and just as descriptive of a society gone wrong. When Pochemu eventually enters the Land of Anarchy, he is confronted by his own strangeness to its citizens, who study the bizarre customs he brings to their free society. This is a timeless tale of the ludicrousness of power and its deluded defenders. In this fable, a child’s innocent questions meet the lies used to justify a world of cruelty and inequality. The result is quasi-absurdist, political comedy. Abba and Wolf Gordin, Jewish anarchists in the Russian Revolution, wrote proletarian literature to enlighten and entertain. It’s a genre that no longer really exists, but given this delightful book, maybe it should.

The book discusses the process of designing total syntheses; the biogenetic-like steroid synthesis, including cyclization of terminal epoxides as well as the total synthesis from nonepoxide precursors; and the synthesis of equilenin, estrone, bisdehydrodoisynolic acid, 18,19-bisnorprogesterone, 19-norpregnanes, and heterocyclic steroids. The text also describes the application of ABD intermediates in the Torgov synthesis; the synthesis of carbocyclics and thiasteroids; and the synthesis from p-anisylcyclohexanes and from C-5, C-8 bridged intermediates. The synthesis based on the type of reaction used in the condensation of the A fragment with the CD portion, as well as the methods of total synthesis in the preparation of 8-azasteroids and 8,13-diazasteroids are also considered. The book further tackles the synthesis of epiandrosterone, cortisone, aldosterone, 3ß-hydroxy-5a-pregnan-20-one, latifoline, conessine, and ring C aromatic steroids; the synthesis of trans-benzohydrindane derivatives and other common derivatives; and the synthesis of CD intermediates. [Lesermeinung] KALLIOPE ist ein Thriller über die geheimnisvollen Mechanismen des Schreibens, über fiktive Menschen, die plötzlich zum Leben erwachen, über den schmalen Grat zwischen Wirklichkeit und Imagination. Ein blutiges Katz-und-Maus-Spiel zwischen Wupper und Rhein. Inhalt: Markus Reuther, ein Wuppertaler Krimi-Autor, hat Probleme mit seinem aktuellen Roman. Seine Protagonistin weigert sich plötzlich, mit ihm zu "sprechen". Hilflos muss er mit ansehen, wie sie von einer Katastrophe in die nächste stolpert. Dabei hat er keine Ahnung, was als nächstes geschieht. Liegt es vielleicht daran, dass es niemanden gibt, der ihn zum Schreiben drängt? Würde die Kommunikation mit seinen fiktiven Charakteren besser laufen, wenn von außen ein wenig mehr Druck auf ihn ausgeübt würde? Dummerweise erzählt er einer Zufallsbekanntschaft in einem Klub von seinen Nöten. Von diesem Zeitpunkt an nimmt sein beschaulicher Alltag eine radikale Wendung. Es beginnt alles ganz harmlos. Reuther erhält mysteriöse Emails von einem Fan, der sich selbst nur als ›K‹ bezeichnet. "Schreibe immer! Tag und Nacht. Und fürchte den Zorn der Götter!" lautet die sich immer wiederholende Botschaft. Nur das Gefasel eines verrückten Lesers oder doch eine ernst zu nehmende Drohung? Für Reuther ist alles nur ein alberner Scherz. Seine selbsternannte Muse hat jedoch gerade erst damit begonnen, ihren Forderungen Nachdruck zu verleihen. Alle Freunde und Bekannten des Autors schweben plötzlich in tödlicher Gefahr.
