Located 15 miles from Salem, Oregon's capital, in the heart of the Willamette Valley, Mount Pisgah gives us one more reason to revere Pinot Noir. However, grapes such as Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, and Tempranillo are also grown. Pinot Noir is its linchpin grape, however. Since Mount Pisgah was formed 65 million years ago as a seafloor volcano, its soil is more volcanic than the surrounding area. That makes for high-acid, elegant Pinot Noirs, Yum! The AVA boasts of 10 vineyards and 3 wineries (so far!). We wanted to experience all that is Pisgah, so we ventured out to the 2 wineries (one wasn't opened to the public then) and 12 other wineries in close-by Van Duzer Corridor AVA.
After years of fantasizing about it, Wine By Appointment made our way to Northern Italy this past June (2022). Northern Italy is comprised of 8 glorious regions: Valle d’Aosta, Piedmont, Lombardy, Liguria, Emilia-Romagna, Veneto, Trento-Alto Adige and Friuli-Venezia Giulia, each with their own magic. While Northern Italy may be a bit less traveled, it doesn't suffer for lackof charm and beauty. From Valle d'Aosta's soaring peaks, Piedmont'srolling hills, bountiful wines and chocolate; Lombardy's gorgeous lakes(Como and Guarda, for starters), and of course, Veneto's Venice, it'shard to imagine why you wouldn't plan a trip there, like tomorrow. We concentrated on visiting and exploring Piedmont, Veneto, andLombardy (great wine areas), leaving the rest of the regions foranother trip.
This delightful celebration of wine is sumptuously illustrated with 40 color photographs from "Wine Spectator" magazine and features lyrical quotes from vintners and philosophers, chefs, and artists on the pleasures and profundities of wine.
