Fundamentals of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy Understand the basics of the essential approach to cognitive-behavioural psychotherapy Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) is a cognitive-behavioural approach to psychotherapy in which patients are taught to identify and reject irrational and damaging thought patterns and emotional responses. By emphasizing patients’ control over their mental and emotional lives, it cultivates honest self-assessment and healthy emotional responses. Since its development in the 1950s, it has stood as one of the most widely used and successful forms of cognitive- behavioural therapy. Fundamentals of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy looks to cultivate a robust foundational understanding of this essential mode of treatment. Seeking to replicate the conditions and learning patterns of an introductory seminar, it emphasizes concrete clinical applications and a continuous connection between theory and practice. The third edition of this pathbreaking guide offers expanded coverage and fully up-to-date research. Readers of the third edition of Fundamentals of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy will also find: Detailed treatment of subjects including meta-emotional problem assessment, client misconceptions, and more Appendices including a homework skills monitoring form, training in REBT, and more An author with decades of experience in REBT and related forms of cognitive- behavioural therapy Fundamentals of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy is ideal for students and researchers looking to develop a working understanding of REBT.
Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) is an approach to counselling and psychotherapy rooted in the CBT tradition, and one that has a distinctive perspective on emotional problems. Understanding Emotional Problems and their Healthy Alternatives provides an accurate understanding of the REBT perspective on eight major emotional problems for which help is sought and their healthy alternatives: ● anxiety and concern ● depression and sadness ● shame and disappointment ● guilt and remorse ● unhealthy anger and healthy anger ● hurt and sorrow ● unhealthy jealousy and healthy jealousy ● unhealthy envy and healthy envy. Rather than discussing treatment methods, Windy Dryden encourages the reader to understand these problems accurately and suggests that doing so will provide a firm foundation for effective treatment. This new edition, updated throughout, reflects the increased interest in helping clients work towards 'healthy negative emotions'. Understanding Emotional Problems and their Healthy Alternatives will be essential reading for therapists, both in training and in practice.

Based on his extensive work demonstrating the benefits of single-session CBT to public and professional audiences, Dryden has developed a single-session approach for work in the therapy and coaching fields. Comprising 30 key points, and divided into two parts – Theory and Practice – it concisely covers the key features of SSI-CBT. This book offers essential guidance for students and practitioners experienced in CBT, as well as practitioners from other theoretical orientations who require an accessible guide to the distinctive theoretical and practical features of this exciting new approach.
Reissued with a new foreword by Raymond DiGiuseppe, PhD, ScD, St. John's University "New trainees often get the theory of psychopathology; they struggle to get the case conceptualization and the strategic plan. Then they ask themselves. "What do I do now?" Going from the abstractions to the actions is not always clear. The Practice of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy represents a compilation of years of theoretical and clinical insights distilled into a specific theory of disturbance and therapy and deductions for specific clinical strategies and techniques....The structure of this books focuses on an explication of the theory, a chapter on basic practice, and a chapter on an in depth case study. A detailed chapter follows on the practice of individual psychotherapy. Although the book is not broken into sections, the next four chapters represent a real treasure. The authors focus on using REBT in couples, family, group, and marathons sessions. Doing REBT with one person is difficult to learn. Once the clinician adds more people to the room with different and sometimes competing agendas things get more complicated. These chapters will not only help the novice clinician but also the experienced REBT therapists work better in these types of sessions. So, consider yourself lucky for having picked up this book. Reading it will help many people get better." - From the Foreword by Raymond DiGiuseppe, PhD, ScD, Director of Professional Education, Albert Ellis Institute; Professor and Chair, Department of Psychology, St. John's University This edition, involving a unique collaboration between Albert Ellis and the world's greatest Ellis scholar, Windy Dryden, modernizes Ellis's pioneering theories. The book begins with an explanation of rational emotive behavior therapy as a general treatment model and then addresses different treatment modalities, including individual, couple, family, and sex therapy. The authors have added material new since the book's original edition on teaching the principles of unconditional self-acceptance in a structured group setting. With extensive use of actual case examples to illustrate each of the different settings, and a new brand new foreword by Raymond DiGiuseppe that sets the book into its 21st-century context.
The Relevance of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy for Modern CBT and Psychotherapy explores the contemporary relevance of this treatment for modern psychotherapy, from the point of view of a leading contributor. First founded in 1955 by Albert Ellis, REBT still has much to offer the field. Despite this, the therapy has been increasingly neglected by cognitive behaviour therapy and other practitioners. To demonstrate its contributed relevance, Professor Windy Dryden outlines in this book his current thinking and practice in regard to REBT. He advocates its key features of flexibility and non-extremeness, and explores what he believes REBT has to contribute to the discussion surrounding contemporary issues in psychotherapy. The Relevance of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy for Modern CBT and Psychotherapy is an excellent resource for CBT and other therapists who would like to know more about the relevance of REBT to their work.
Psychotherapists and critics of psychotherapy outline their views and answer their adversaries. The critics draw attention to the inadequacy of research validating the results of psychotherapy and argue that no treatment at all may be as effective as therapy, that some people's experience of therapy is harmful, that there is a preciousness and pretentiousness about many psychotherapists, that psychotherapists may be flawed and exploitative, that psychotherapy is anachronistically detached from the new-paradigm views, and that psychotherapy embodies a form of psychological reductionism that weakens its credibility. The object of this book is to reduce the antagonism between the two camps so that future debate can be more constructive than hitherto. The contributors are Michael Barkham, Ian Craib, Gill Edwards, Albert Ellis, Hans Eysenck, Stephen Frosh, Sol Garfield, Ernest Gellner, Jeremy Holmes, Paul Kline, Katherine Mair, Jeffrey Masson, David Pilgrim, Jeff Roberts, John Rowan, David Shapiro and Stuart Sutherland.

This straightforward guide introduces the newcomer to the core theoretical principles and therapeutic strategies of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT). Starting with the ABC model of emotion popularized by Albert Ellis from the outset when he developed his approach to CBT, the guide then shows how REBT distinguishes between unhealthy and healthy negative emotions. From there it outlines the four irrational attitudes theorized to be at the core of emotional and behavioural disturbance. Finally, the newcomer to REBT will develop an appreciation for how REBT inoculates clients against future problems and teaches them to maintain and extend their treatment gains. This Newcomer’s Guide will be a useful contribution to counsellors and psychotherapists in training, either in Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy or another cognitive-behavioural approach.

Rational-emotive therapy was developed over a number of years from the work of Albert Ellis, who set up the Institute of Rational-Emotive Therapy in New York. As a form of therapy it integrates some of the features of both the behaviour therapies and the more traditional psychotherapies, although its closest links are with cognitive behaviour therapy. Originally published in 1984, this was the first book by a British author on this subject and it brings together all the author’s previous work in this area. Its unique character is that it presents both the fundamentals, based on the work of Ellis, and innovations, developed in part by the author, extending this work. The book therefore combines theory and practice and will be of interest to those in counselling, clinical psychology, psychiatry and social work, as well as those in nursing and occupational therapy.
This book brings together the papers written by the authors over the last fifteen years on the historical and philosophical foundations of Albert Ellis' Rational Psychotherapy (later Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, REBT) and its relationship to Stoicism, especially the later practical form represented by Epictetus. It goes beneath the well known similarities between Stoic "spiritual exercises" and modern psychotherapy, to look at the cause of these similarities. These lie in the conceptual continuities that connect the Stoics and other ancient philosophies with the modern cultural framework underlying psychotherapy.
In his earlier book Rational-Emotive Therapy: Fundamentals and Innovations Dr Dryden outlined the central features of Rational-Emotive Therapy (RET) as it had developed in and from the work of Albert Ellis. He then proceeded to discuss innovations within the theory, several of which had been instigated by the author. Originally published in 1987, this book builds upon these latter elements. It discusses the theoretical basis of RET, arguing that it can be accurately described as theoretically consistent eclectic therapy, and analyses the problems encountered in, and the benefits derived from, its practice. At the time this book provided a state of the art discussion of RET and will still be of interest for those involved in counselling, psychotherapy, clinical psychology, psychiatry and social work.
Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy: Responses to Frequently Asked Questions aims to answer the 50 most frequently asked questions on REBT by trainees, novice practitioners, and clients themselves. This concise and readable book is divided into five parts, with each focusing on responding to questions about different elements of REBT from theory to practice and applications: • Part 1: The Nature of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy in Context • Part 2: The Practice of REBT • Part 3: Miscellaneous Questions • Part 4: Personal Questions about REBT • Part 5: FAQs from Clients The book will appeal to a wide range of counsellors and psychotherapists. It will provide trainee and novice therapists with answers to some of their own questions, give trainers and supervisors helpful responses to frequently asked questions in training and aid all levels of practitioners in answering questions from clients.
This book is a comprehensive guide for coaches on how to use rational-emotive and cognitive behaviour therapy to help coachees with their emotional problems within a coaching context. In this fully updated new edition, Windy Dryden: discusses the eight major emotions that feature in coachees’ emotional problems and their healthy alternatives outlines a step-by-step guide to the use of RECBT in the coaching context illustrates these points with a case of a coachee whose progress towards a personal development objective was hampered by an emotional problem and how the coach implemented RECBT to help her deal with the obstacle and resume development-based coaching. Dealing with Emotional Problems in Coaching will be a valuable resource for all those involved in coaching.

In this book, Windy Dryden selects the eight ideas that have had the most influence on him in his career as a psychotherapist, and which form the bedrock of his work. These ideas reflect both his specific and his general interests in the field. The book offers insight into the author's practice and the theories that have informed his work in a therapeutic setting. It discusses the role that attitudes play in psychologically disturbed and psychologically healthy responses to life’s adversities. The book also elaborates the author’s views on what promotes psychological change as well as why he considers the concepts of responsibility and choice to be so important in psychotherapy. Finally, the book highlights Windy Dryden’s more recent work in the field of single-session therapy. This accessible and engaging book will be a fascinating read for counsellors and psychotherapists, both in training and practice.

The Working Alliance in Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy explores the principles and practice of REBT from the perspective of working alliance theory. Windy Dryden seeks to debunk the myth that REBT neglects the therapeutic relationship by breaking down working alliance theory into specific domains in order to highlight its potential in this form of therapy. He introduces the reader to the ABCs of REBT and its basic practice, followed by the working alliance concept that forms the basis of this book. He then shows how the practice of REBT can be enhanced by the therapist attending to each of the four components of the alliance: bonds, views, goals and tasks. The book is written for trainees and established therapists within REBT.
