The first book to consider the shellac disc as a global format. With the rise of the gramophone around 1900, the shellac disc traveled the world and eventually became the dominant sound format in the first half of the twentieth century. Format Friction brings together a set of local encounters with the shellac disc, beginning with its preconditions in South Asian knowledge and labor, to offer a global portrait of this format. Spun at seventy-eight revolutions per minute, the shellac disc rapidly became an industrial standard even while the gramophone itself remained a novelty. The very basis of this early sound reproduction technology was friction, an elemental materiality of sound shaped through cultural practice. Using friction as a lens, Gavin Williams illuminates the environments plundered, the materials seized, and the ears entangled in the making of a sound format. Bringing together material, political, and music history, Format Friction decenters the story of a beloved medium, and so explores new ways of understanding listening in technological culture more broadly.
Have you ever thought of using your iPhone or iPad as a remote control? Have you wanted to make cool electronics projects, but you weren't sure where to start? In Arduino and iOS Projects, you'll find a lot of cool gadgets you can make with Arduino and control with your iOS device. No development experience necessary! Using JavaScript-based Node.js and the easy-to-learn Arduino language, you'll first learn how to select the best Arduino for you, how to get it up and running, then how to get it to talk to your iPhone or iPad. Once you've got these basics down, you'll have a variety of fun projects to choose from: a light switch controller, a candy grabber, a hacked remote control car, a proximity sensor, and even an NFC reader and an iBeacon. If you'd like to try these projects with both the Arduino and the Raspberry Pi, you can also pick up Raspberry Pi and iOS Projects and see the same projects done using Raspberry Pi instead of Arduino. Author Gavin Williams will walk you through both flavors of iOS-controlled projects. And if you really want to see how Arduino can easily work with iOS, Arduino and iOS Projects is definitely the book for you.
Originally presented as a lecture, this occasional paper argues that definitions of democracy are incomplete and their meanings dependent on their historical context.

After considering the aging population in developed countries, it has become clear to physicians and public policy administrators that prevention of cancer must play a more important role in national anti-cancer policy than it has in the past. The recent introduction of an HPV vaccine, coupled with discoveries concerning the relationship of H. pylori and cancer has brought the role of infectious agents in cancer into sharp focus in the medical community. While interest in the subject has grown, no single source existed to bring clinicians up-to-date on developments in disease mechanisms, population-based risk assessment and policy considerations in the field of cancer prevention. In this current and comprehensive text the authors review the basic science and clinical implications of individual infectious agents, while going beyond a mere update of the literature to offer insights on the current emerging prevention possibilities. This prevention perspective is what makes this particular text so valuable to researchers, epidemiologists, health care policy makers and oncologists. The discussion is organized to highlight the vital role of primary cancer prevention, and suggest directions for future research, practice and policy. Since HPV continues to be at the center of interest in the arena of infectious agents and cancer, the authors frame the majority of their discussion on this now-famous virus. The sheer volume of literature related to this virus and its many related cancers, and the burgeoning research on the development and implementation of a prophylactic vaccine necessitates a much fuller review of this infectious agent. Therefore, the book is roughly divided into two equal parts: one part devoted to HPV and another part devoted to five other prominent infectious agents in cancer.
A cloud of gloom hung over Mouseland like a blanket. All was not well. The recent cheese shortage grew worse every day. Nothing and no one could explain why this was happening. Tartaf, the Cheese Chancellor could give no reasonable account. Frustrated by these events, the Mouse Council called an emergency meeting in the capital city of Mouseopolis. Every expert, cheeseologists, cheese historians, and cheese makers were assembled to get to the root of the problem. Failing to find a solution, they decided to appoint a hero to investigate the matter. After a careful search, they made an unlikely selection. Mostly Mouse had accomplished absolutely nothing. He was well known in party circles for having a good time. He had no interest in Mouseland’s problems. However, in this society, there were rules, and he was no exception. Mouse Law clearly stated he could not refuse. A major factor in his selection was the fact that he was a direct descendant of Mouse the First, the founder of Mouseland

The perception of wine aroma is an excellent example of the human ability to experience multiple sensations as a single gestalt, i.e. a configural perception or as a top-down process. For example, the same wine recognized as Riesling could, after some time spent on analysis, yield, “This Riesling has a moderate petrol aroma and a faint lemon smell.” Recent studies of binary mixtures showed that only similar odors cross-adapt while dissimilar odors suppress each other in mixtures, indicating a possible explanation for the suppression of fruity/floral by 2,2,1-trimethyl- dihydronaphthalene (TDN) in Riesling.
This technical note provides an overview of current issues and ideas that revenue administrations can consider regarding gender equality. It discusses the interactions between revenue administrations and gender equality and explores how revenue administrations can administer gender-sensitive tax laws effectively and apply a gender lens when administering tax or trade laws with a view to reducing barriers for women’s employment, entrepreneurship, and trade. It also provides practical considerations for a revenue administration in building gender perspectives in reform plans and shares several examples that highlight targeted measures that have led to positive outcomes in several countries.
Angela and Gavin are two social misfits that have somehow found a way to fit together in a world that neither one of them truly feels a part of. When he was just a small boy, Gavin's mother abandoned him and left him in his father's care but since his father's recent death, he finds himself more lost than he has ever been. Angela lives with her two younger sisters, a mother who is constantly away from home working to keep the bills paid, and an abusive stepfather who makes her skin crawl whenever he looks at her. The dysfunction of both of their broken homes threatens their sanity but can they save each other from depression, despair and the pain of all they have had to endure?

Originally published in 1974 Sociology and Development are a selection papers from the British Sociological Association’s conference on development. The book combines both theoretical discussion and empirical material drawn from both urban and rural areas in Africa, Latin America, China, the USSR and Great Britain, as well as from specific studies on the mass media and the health services. Above all, the papers contribute to a greater understanding of reality in dependent, less developed societies, and so modify some of the over-simplifications introduced by the sweeping vision of the new theorists.

Sixteen and stressed. It wasn’t the driver’s test that had Ravyn on edge. It was the Inquisition’s test. Every four years, the Inquisition tested her for any hint of paranormal abilities that would mark her as a witch. Oh, their methods had evolved over the centuries. They didn’t burn witches at the stake anymore. Today, burning a witch meant chemical and surgical brain surgery to eliminate any unnatural talents the witch possessed. Internationally backed, the new secular Inquisition formed an elite police force standing against darkness. Yeah, right. Ravyn knew firsthand what it meant. She helped her mom take care of her grandmother, accused witch, burned by the Inquisition, and barely able to function now. Just being her granddaughter was enough to put Ravyn under suspicion. So, yeah, turning sixteen was stressful. Especially since she suspected she might be a witch after all.
