Interest in Theophrastus, Aristotle's pupil and successor as head of the Peripatetic School, has increased considerably since the 1992 publication of Theophastus of Eresus: Sources for his Life, Works, Thought and Life. Now comes an extensive commentary on the ethical sources. It considers Theophrastus in relation to Aristotle, to other members of the Peripatos and to the Stoic philosophers who became Theophrastus' rivals. Special attention is given to Theophrastus' insistence that virtue by itself cannot guarantee happiness. Also to the difference between manners and moral virtue, the relation between innate character and fate, the value of marriage and how animal behavior relates to that of human beings.
This volume concerns Theophrastus, Aristotle's pupil and successor as head of the Peripatetic School. The focus is twofold. First, it deals with discoveries and inventions, both useful and pleasurable, and more generally changes that transformed the way people live. Theophrastus wrote a work entitled On Discoveries, which may be regarded as cultural history. Second, the volume focuses on proverbs: familiar sayings containing useful truths that have been observed by earlier generations and passed on in a form that is concise and attractive. Theophrastus wrote a work entitled On Proverbs and made use of proverbs in his writings on ethics, rhetoric and humor. He recognized their importance in educating the young and maintaining the traditions of an earlier age.

Theophrastus of Eresus was Aristotle's successor as head of the Peripatetic School. He is best known for a humorous collection of character sketches, but his importance in antiquity and for the history of thought in general is much greater. He was the founder of systematic botany, and his work on logic went well beyond that of Aristotle, as did his interest in rhetoric and poetics. He was the first to collect the laws of different city-states, and in ethics he emphasized manners as well as moral virtue. In recent years, his importance has been more fully appreciated through the efforts of Professor William Fortenbaugh, who founded Project Theophrastus, an international undertaking whose goal has been to collect, edit and comment on the fragments of Theophrastus. While leading this project, Professor Fortenbaugh has been writing on Theophrastus, highlighting his achievements and making connections between areas like logic and rhetoric, psychology and religion, ethics and politics. The present volume brings together for the first time twenty-two of his essays.
Eudemus of Rhodes was a pupil of Aristotle in the second half of the fourth century BCE. When Aristotle died, having chosen Theophrastus as his successor, Eudemus returned to Rhodes where it appears he founded his own school. His contributions to logic were significant: he took issue with Aristotle concerning the status of the existential "is," and together with Theophrastus he made important contributions to hypothetical syllogistic and modal logic. He wrote at length on physics, largely following Aristotle, and took an interest in animal behavior. His histories of geometry, arithmetic, and astronomy were of great importance and are responsible for much of what we know of these subjects in earlier times.Volume 11 in the series Rutgers Studies in Classical Humanities is different in that it is composed entirely of articles that discuss Eudemus from a variety of viewpoints. Sixteen scholars representing seven nations have contributed essays to the volume. A special essay by Dimitri Gutas brings together for the first time the Arabic material relating to Eudemus. Volume 16 of Transaction's acclaimed Rutgers University Studies in Classical Humanities series, continues the work of Project Theophrastus on the School of Aristotle. The subject of this volume is Strato of Lampsacus in Mysia on the Hellespont. Strato was the third head of the Peripatetic School after Aristotle and Theophrastus. He succeeded the latter in c. 286 BCE and was in turn succeeded by Lyco of Troas in c. 268. Diogenes Laertius describes Strato as a distinguished person who became known as "the physicist," because more than anyone else he devoted himself to the careful study of nature. Strato's concern with the physical world is well attested by the titles of his books: On the Void, On the Heaven, and On the Wind. His other books point to a keen interest in human physiology, animal life and diseases. But it would be a mistake to think that Strato was uninterested in other areas of philosophic concern. Indeed, he wrote works on logic, first principles, theology, politics and ethics. None of this work survives intact, but the reports that have come down to us reveal much of present-day interest. Included is a new and complete edition of the ancient sources, together with a critical apparatus to the ancient texts, an English translation, and notes to the translation.
This series in the field of classics grew out of Project Theophrastus, an international undertaking whose goal is to collect, edit, and comment on the fragments of Theophrastus, Greek philosopher, Aristotle's pupil and second head of the Peripatetic School. Contributions are by international experts, and each volume will have a particular focus. Volume I is devoted to Arius Didymus, court philosopher to Caesar Augustus and author of an extensive survey of Stoic and Peripatetic ethics. Volumes II and III will concentrate on Theophrastus and disseminate knowledge gained through work on the project. Volume IV will focus on Cicero and his knowledge of Hellenistic philosophy.
Examines the teaching and practice of the twin arts of argumentation -- rhetoric and dialectic -- in the time of Galileo. Galileo was an ardent controversialist on behalf of his astronomical theories, yet many today are unacquainted with the kinds of argument that became a focal point in his famous trial. The authors combine their vast knowledge of rhetoric, history, and philosophy to explain the background of the dispute between science and religion. They present an engaging discussion of the prevailing modes of rhetorical and scientific arguments in Northern Italy during the Renaissance. They display primary texts on the arts of rhetoric and dialectic by authors whose thought was known to Galileo.
This volume focuses on Aristotle’s practical philosophy. His analysis of emotional response takes pride of place. It is followed by discussion of his moral psychology: the division of the human soul into emotional and deliberative parts. Moral virtue is studied in relation to emotion, and animals are shown to lack both emotion and virtue. Different kinds of friendship are analyzed, and the effects of vehemence, i.e., temperament are given special attention. Aristotle’s justification for assigning natural slaves and women subordinate roles receives detailed consideration. The same is true of his analysis of correct and incorrect constitutions. Finally, persuasion is taken up from several angles including Aristotle’s emphasis on the presentation of character and his curious dismissal of delivery in speech.
This volume comments on the sources for understanding Theophrastus' contributions to rhetorical and poetic theory. The ancient sources themselves, the known titles of Theophrastean works, and the various reports concerning his doctrines are all considered.
Each paper explores the influences on different parts of Peripatetic rhetoric, its discussion of character, emotion, reason, and style, its relationships with other texts, including those of Theodectes and the Rhetorica ad Alexandrum, and its relationship with the oratory of the 4th century BC.
