We know that God works in mysterious ways, yet the mysteries of God can leave us with lifelong questions about his nature and character. Thankfully, God has provided us with a way to understand him and ourselves betterand that is by focusing on him and on his Word. In More God-centric and Less Situation-centric Living, author William Bill Porter encourages us to shift the focus of our lives and our thoughts back to God and away from ourselves. By creating a theology of the inherent goodness of God, Porter shows how a God-centric life is a life of almost total submission to Gods sovereignty, and that many churches today do not teach the truth that God is about more than solving personal problems. More God-centric living enables you to acknowledge, accept, and use all the fruits of the Spirit and then walk with contentment into the gardens of both the bouquets and weeds of life, as the apostle Paul encouraged us in Philippians 4:12. You will acknowledge and walk in the realization that the gospel is not just the good news of Godbut that God is the good news! That God rules! That God is sovereign! And that God is central!
In his life and in his music, Cole Porter was the top—the pinnacle of wit and sophistication. From the 1910s through the ‘50s, from Yale pep rallies through the Broadway triumphs of Anything Goes and Kiss Me, Kate, he delighted audiences with a glittering torrent of song: “I Get a Kick Out of You.” “Night and Day,” “Love for Sale,” and “Just One of Those Things.” The bright surface of these gems—their catchy melodies and ingenious lyrics—made them instant pop hits. Their more subtle qualities and their musical and emotional depth have made them lasting standards, among the greatest glories of the American songbook. In Cole Porter, William McBrien has thoroughly captured the creator of these songs, whose life was one not only of wealth and privilege but also of tragedy, secrecy, and courage. A prodigal young man, Porter found his aesthetic and emotional anchor in a long, loving, if sexless marriage, while continuing to maintain many discreet affairs with men. In 1937, at the height of his success, he suffered a near-fatal riding accident; his last eighteen years were marked by pain, drugs, and repeated operations on his legs, years of physical agony but unstinting artistic achievement. Here is the book that Porter’s fans have long hoped for—a life that informs the great music and lyrics though illuminating glimpses of the hidden, complicated, private man.
O. Henry is the pen name of American writer William Sydney Porter. At vatious times he was employed as a pharmacist, draftsman, bank teller, and journalist. His time as a bank teller led to arrest for embezzlement and a prison sentence. Through it all, he continued to write, producing four hundred short stories. O. Henry stories are famous for their surprise endings. He was considered the the American version of Guy de Maupassant. His stories are set in the early years of th twentieth century, many in New York City, and deal for the most part with ordinary people. "The Roads of Destiny and Others" is a collection of twenty-two of his stories. "Whistling Dick's Christmas Stocking" was the first story be to published under the O. Henry name. The title story, "Roads of Destiny," illustrates O. Henry's talent for irony and surprise ending.
