In this two-volume set, first published in 1839, students and history scholars will find William Dunlap's extensive history of New Netherlands, an area from the St. Lawrence river to the Delaware Bay, stretching from the coast westward through what is now upstate New York. The Dutch landed at Noten Eylant, now Governor's island, and quickly spread their settlers over the territory they wished to claim. They further acquired Manhattan Island, founded New Amsterdam, and took up trading in earnest. Dunlap chronicles the many treaties signed with the local Indian tribes and details for readers how the various areas of the Northeast came to bear their current names. In this volume, he also discusses the intrusion of the English into New Netherlands, Holland's battle to retake its colony, and the eventual ceding of the colony to England for good. Volume I ends with the beginning of the American Revolutionary War. American historian and playwright WILLIAM DUNLAP (1766-1839) was born in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. He managed the John Street Theatre and the Park Theatre in New York. Among his many plays are Andre (1798) and The Virgin of the Sun (1800).

Among the laws agreed upon in England for the governing of the Province of Pennsylvania was one providing for a registry of marriages, births, and deaths. Marriage licenses were issued from the Office of the Provincial Secretary, those listed in this work dating from 1742. Some earlier registers of licenses and some kept at a later date are missing, yet this work still features a base list of 6,500 marriages, to which we have added a further 3,500 marriages from articles in the Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography and The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine. All 10,000 marriages are based on public records as opposed to church records.

Amanda Worsham is born during the War of 1812, in Charleston, South Carolina, to a wealthy British family involved with sailing vessels and worldwide shipping. "Sandcastles" is analogous to the ill-fated Southern plantation system, in that it exists when slavery exists, and is destined to vanish when slavery ends-just as the proverbial sandcastle disappears before the oncoming tide. "Tall Ships" alludes to the family's shipping business utilizing "windjammers," or beautiful tall sailing vessels for global sea trade. "Vanities" are whimsical yet powerful emotions. And to relegate another to slavery is vanity in its extreme (a self-evident truth). And unabashedly, it is a Christian, pro-life, anti-prostitution, and anti-slavery descriptive novel filled with human frailty and anguish. This story "is a handful," so to speak, dealing with family standards, love, sexuality, homosexuality, destructive prostitution (the so-called "white slavery" curse), plus the learning an altogether-fabulous wealth management stratagem. As she begins her marriage to longtime beau, Timothy Caldwell, Amanda assumes the Worsham family's New York-, Boston-, and Charleston-based overseas shipping business (an endeavor with tall ships and part of the fledgling clandestine military industrial complex). She witnesses the end of the Revolutionary War, the beginning of the American Civil War, and she helps shape a dynasty you'll long remember.

The Red Hills region is an idyllic setting filled with longleaf pines that stretches from Tallahassee, Florida, to Thomasville, Georgia. At its heart lies Tall Timbers, a former hunting plantation. In 1919, sportsman Henry L. Beadel purchased the Red Hills plantation to be used for quail hunting. As was the tradition, he conducted prescribed burnings after every hunting season in order to clear out the thick brush to make it more appealing to the nesting birds. After the U.S. Forest Service outlawed the practice in the 1920s, condemning it as harmful for the forest and its wildlife, the quail population diminished dramatically. Astonished by this loss and encouraged by his naturalist friend Herbert L. Stoddard, Beadel set his sights on conserving the land in order to study the effects of prescribed burnings on wildlife. Upon his death in 1958, Beadel donated the entire Tall Timbers estate to be used as an ecological research station. The Legacy of a Red Hills Hunting Plantation traces Beadel’s evolution from sportsman and naturalist to conservationist. Complemented by a wealth of previously unpublished, rare vintage photographs, it follows the transformation of the plantation into what its founders envisioned--a long-term plot study station, independent of government or academic funding and control.
