After completing his PhD, Peter Case returns home, eager to join his best friend’s marine salvage business on the Canadian West Coast. The cheerful prospect of getting on with his life is quickly shattered by a hair-raising highway pursuit through the Rockies. The intrigue and chaos that hounded him in Jamaica had followed him home. Between attempts on his life, a sketchy salvage job, and a mysterious whistling saviour, Case sifts through lies and half-truths as he delves deeper into the mystery. His search lures him into a multi-agency manhunt for an international crime syndicate operating somewhere within the rugged beauty of the Gulf Islands. Case can only be sure of two unfortunate truths. First, he’d obviously pissed off the wrong people in Jamaica. Second, while the agency was hunting the syndicate, the syndicate was hunting him.
While studying toward his doctorate at a remote Jamaican marine station, Peter Case is swept into a world of intrigue when tragedy strikes during a routine collection dive. His diving buddy subsequently dies, but Case refuses to accept the official cause of death. Naively attempting to uncover the truth, he stumbles deep into a world of deceit and violence. Case is drawn further and further into extraordinary circumstances, inadvertently disrupting a covert CIA surveillance operation and becoming entangled in the aspirations of a global crime syndicate. His actions endanger the lives of friends and colleagues, compelling Case to take risks he’d have thought unimaginable just a few days before. When the full consequences of his quest for the truth come to light, Case is forced to stand alone against the syndicate, armed only with his dive knife and an ill-conceived plan.
Peter Case is just beginning to enjoy life on Vancouver Island and the burgeoning success of Left Coast Salvage when his parents are killed by a natural gas explosion. He’s skeptical of the circumstances, but authorities conclude it was an unfortunate accident. Then Case’s friends start turning up dead at an astonishing speed in a series of subsequent “unfortunate accidents”. Case suspects these so called accidents are targeted attacks. No one believes him. Despite the assistance Case and his best friend Hal provided the CIA during their previous escapades, none of the agents can be reached. They turn to their contacts in CSIS and MI6 for help, only to hear there is zero evidence the incidents are linked and no resources available to assist them. When Hal’s brother is killed in yet another accident, Case and Hal take matters into their own hands. Case doesn’t know if he’s just being paranoid or if they’re actually being targeted. But he’s going to find out.
