One of the most remarkable thinkers of this century, Arnold Toynbee won world-wide recognition as the author of the monumental ten-volume A Study of History. Its publication and phenomenal success brought him fame and the highest praise, as the reading public proclaimed him the most renowned scholar in the world. This thought-provoking, engaging study of Toynbee, written by one of today's most eminent historians, weaves together Toynee's intellectual accomplishments and the personal difficulties of his private life. Providing both an intimate portrait of a leading thinker and a judicious evaluation of his work and his legacy for the the study of history, William H. McNeill offers both a biography and a commentary on how to write and understand history. Along with an illuminating discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of A Study of History and the countless other works written by Toynbee, McNeill offers a compelling examination of the responses of other historians (including the devastating attack launched by Hugh Trevor-Roper) and Toynbee's attempts to modify his Study to answer these criticisms. McNeill also explores his tormented personal life, including his troubled marriage to Rosalind Murray and the suicide of his son, Anthony. In this sympathetic depiction of a life, both triumphant and tragic, McNeill brings his skills to bear on one of the greatest figures in his field, illuminating a career of rare accomplishment.
An examination of an extremely popular box office genre - the gross-out movie - Laughing Screaming is a serious study of this unashamedly lowbrow product.
This volume is the author's contribution to the Genealogy of his native state. It is the result of years of conscientious labor in this neglected field of our State History, and comprises only a portion of the material which he has gathered. On the reception of this volume, with its limited edition, will depend, in a measure, whether another volume shall follow.

Zenobia was the third-century Syrian queen who rebelled against Roman rule. Before Emperor Aurelian prevailed against her forces, she had seized almost one-third of the Roman Empire. Today, her legend attracts thousands of visitors to her capital, Palmyra, one of the great ruined cities of the ancient world. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, during the time of Ottoman rule, travel to the Middle East was almost impossible for Westerners. That did not stop five daring women from abandoning their conventional lives and venturing into the heart of this inhospitable region. Improbable Women explores the lives of Hester Stanhope, Jane Digby, Isabel Burton, Gertrude Bell, and Freya Stark, narrating the story of each woman’s pilgrimage to Palmyra to pay homage to the warrior queen. Although the women lived in different time periods, ranging from the eighteenth century to the mid–twentieth century, they all had middle- to upper-class British backgrounds and overcame great societal pressures to pursue their independence. Cotterman situates their lives against a backdrop of the Middle Eastern history that was the setting for their adventures. Divided into six sections, one devoted to Zenobia and one on each of the five women, Improbable Women is a fascinating glimpse into the experiences and characters of these intelligent, open-minded, and free-spirited explorers.
This is the eagerly awaited new edition of Law of Torts, the complete Irish tort law reference book. For this, the contents have been extensively revised since the last edition was published in 2000. Key developments are detailed and relevant recent case law is examined. This book is essential for both legal practitioners and people studying Irish law. Recent important legislation examined in the book includes: Criminal Law (Defence and the Dwelling) Act 2011, Civil Law (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2011, Defamation Act 2009, Consumer Protection Act 2007, Civil Liability and Courts Act 2004 and Personal Injuries Assessment Board Act 2003. Key developments and case law are examined in areas such as pure economic loss, limitations and purchase of financial products, vicarious liability for sexual assaults, damages, privacy, defamation, psychiatric injury, liability of public authorities, employers' liability, professional negligence, defective buildings and products and occupiers' liability. First published in 1980, Law of Torts has long been a cornerstone work in Irish law, indeed in the foreword to the first edition Judge Brian Walshe noted that the book represented a challenge to the 'unquestioned assumption that English text-books would satisfy all needs.' This new addition will only add to the book's long-established merit and value.
Among the laws agreed upon in England for the governing of the Province of Pennsylvania was one providing for a registry of marriages, births, and deaths. Marriage licenses were issued from the Office of the Provincial Secretary, those listed in this work dating from 1742. Some earlier registers of licenses and some kept at a later date are missing, yet this work still features a base list of 6,500 marriages, to which we have added a further 3,500 marriages from articles in the Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography and The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine. All 10,000 marriages are based on public records as opposed to church records.
The View from Up Here By: William Joseph Hunter As we are all well aware, U.S. history shows us a number of fallacies. As American citizens, we have certain responsibilities to our fellow man. The U.S. Government is doing everything that they can to keep us divided. It is time that we the people of the U.S.A. stop listening to the claptrap that we are being fed and go forward together. Author William Joseph Hunter tells us, “This is not about you. This is not about me. This is about us. If you don’t believe me, have you DNA tested and find out for yourself I can assure you that we are a cut above any other place on this planet. If we know where we came from, we know exactly where we are going. If not, why is it that all of these people are trying to come to the United States?” We need to live each day so that it will ensure there will be a tomorrow for everyone.
