Biblical religion is driven by a longing for God’s ultimate order of justice and peace. Most of this longing is steeped in the patriarchal symbols of kingship, monarchs, lords, fathers, and princes. This symbolism came to bind European churches to the legitimation of monarchies and empires for over a millennium. The American and now global experiment separated the churches, with their kingdom language, from government dedicated to democratic, republican, and federal constitutional order. Religious efforts to guide and critique government have subsequently suffered from political irrelevance or theocratic nationalism. Everett lifts up the biblical and classical origins of our present republican experiment to construct a theological position and religious symbolism that can imaginatively engage our present public life with a contemporary language permeated with a transcendent vision.
The New School was a center for adult education established in 1918 in New York and was always open to and supported by Jews. Ch. 5 (pp. 84-106) describes the creation of a graduate faculty in 1933 by president Alvin Johnson. He brought twelve leading Jewish scholars from Germany, assisted by private Jewish contributions and by the Rockefeller Foundation which, however, disapproved of the Jewish and socialist background of these scholars and feared the disruption of the quota system. Ch. 6 (pp. 107-127) describes the refugees' studies on the nature of fascism and their gradual abandonment of socialism. Hans Staudinger, in particular, emphasized the crucial role of racism in the evolution of the Nazi state. With the outbreak of World War II, the New School tried to save more refugees but was obstructed by State Department officials. Also mentions the work of Hannah Arendt at the New School in the 1950s-60s.

Through a leadership group called the power elite, the corporate rich provide campaign donations and other gifts and favors to elected officials, serve on federal advisory committees, and receive appointments to key positions in government, all of which make it possible for the corporate rich and the power elite to rule the country, despite constant challenges from the inclusionary alliance and from the Democratic Party. The book explains the role of both benign and dark attempts to influence public opinion, the machinations of the climate-denial network, and how the Supreme Court came to have an ultraconservative majority, who serve as a backstop for the corporate community as well as a legitimator of restrictions on voting rights, union rights, and abortion rights, by ruling that individual states have the power to set such limits. Despite all this highly concentrated power, it will be the other 99.5%, not the top 0.5%, who will decide the fate of the United States in the 2020s on all the important issues.
