Dr. William Glasser offers a new psychology that, if practiced, could reverse our widespread inability to get along with one another, an inability that is the source of almost all unhappiness. For progress in human relationships, he explains that we must give up the punishing, relationship–destroying external control psychology. For example, if you are in an unhappy relationship right now, he proposes that one or both of you could be using external control psychology on the other. He goes further. And suggests that misery is always related to a current unsatisfying relationship. Contrary to what you may believe, your troubles are always now, never in the past. No one can change what happened yesterday.
Stations of the Mind is a logical and necessary expansion of William Glasser's basic Reality Therapy ideas, an expansion which began with Positive Addiction about meditation, running, and other "good" addictions. In clear, nontechnical language, this book tells how our brains function in living—specifically what we do, think, and feel. Any reader can use it to make a major impact on the social sciences, medicine, and the growing field of meditation. Dr. Glasser's thesis, based on the Control System Psychology of William Powers, a student of cybernetics and consultant on this book, is that we, like all living creatures, are internally motivated. All of us are driven by powerful internal forces that push us not only to survive, but toward belonging, worthwhileness, fun, and freedom. From these and perhaps our other basic needs, we construct a complex, unique a personal world. Our brain then acts as the control system that deals with the real world to try and control it so that it comes as close as possible to our personal world. Glasser points out that what happens outside us in the real world is of little or no significance unless it relates to what is already inside us in our personal world. This new, human, internally motivated psychology contrasts sharply with the standard, external, mechanical, stimulus-response behavior psychology currently so popular. Glasser strips away much of the mystery that has surrounded the workings of our mind. Those who read the book carefully need never again be puzzled as to how we behave or about many of the whys of our behavior. It explains the common psychological upsets—from acting out to depression, from nonmedical pain and disability to psychoses. Dr. Glasser sets forth a new usable explanation of how addictive drugs work in the brain and why we use them. He also explains how our brain malfunctions and causes us to suffer psychosomatic illnesses. Finally, as we understand how our brain struggles to fulfill our needs, we will gain valuable insight into our most pressing social problem—how to get along with each other; that must come through negotiation and compromise. Our brain is not built to do otherwise. Here is a carefully developed thesis, a clear explanation of complex ideas, and a wide variety of ways that we can use them in our lives and our work.

William Glasser, M.D., puts his successful choice theory to work in our schools--with a new approach in increasing student motivation. "Dr. Glasser translates choice theory into a productive, classroom model of team learning with emphasis on satisfaction and excitement. Working in small teams, students find that knowledge contributes to power, friendship and fun. Because content and the necessary student collaboration skills must be taught, teachers need to develop skills if they are to use this model successfully. The dividends are 'turned-on ' students and satisfied teachers." --Madeline Hunter, University of California at Los Angeles "Choice Theory in the Classroom is a landmark book, without question one of the most important and useful books for teachers to appear in a long while. Written with rare lucidity and grace, the book has numerous instantly usable ideas that will contribute fundamentally to the success of classroom teachers. William Glasser combines his extensive theoretical expertise and wide practical experience to provide a practical and illuminating guide for teachers [that] should be required reading in every college of education in the country." --David and Roger Johnson, University of Minnesota "Choice Theory in the Classroom presents an insightful analysis of what is wrong with traditional school and what need to be done about it. Dr. Glasser gives a compelling rationale for the use of learning-teams in schools to capture the excitement and commitment students display in sports but rarely in the classroom. The book is well written and persuasive. I hope every teacher in America buys it, believes it, and behaves accordingly." --Robert Slavin, John Hopkins University

In this companion volume to the bestselling Choice Theory, Dr. William Glasser and his wife, Carleen Glasser, have imagined typical conversations in real-life situations--between parent and child, two partners in a relationship, teacher and student, and boss and employee. On the left-hand page is a typical controlling order or threat, and on the right a more reasonable version, using choice theory, which is more likely to get a favorable response from the child, lover, student, or employee. Through these examples, the principles of choice theory come alive.
This should be required reading by every school administator, every teacher, every board member and all university faculty involved in the training of teachers. There is no doubt that we need to squeeze all blame, all coerion and all criticism out of any people-related business. Not until we realize that schools are in a people business will we ever be able to make meaningful changes." --Dr. Albert Mamary, former superintendent of schools, Johnson City, New York

Realistic, clear, insightful and highly practical, The Preferred Provider's Handbook will help therapists to understand the managed care marketplace and to develop the strategies necessary to meet its many challenges. One Man In His Time: A Memoir" is an account of a full life which includes Prentiss's participation in both national and local politics at a high level and his friendship with major figures including Sen. George McGovern and many others. He had two meetings with Gov. Jimmy Carter during his presidential campaigns, and he was a guest in the Reagan White House to receive a major medal. Other portions of his memoir describe, mostly in anecdotal accounts, his extensive work with troubled teenagers sent to his program by the Orange County Florida Juvenile Court. He was also a teacher and administrator at both the secondary (Florida Military School) and college (Valencia College in Orlando) levels of education. He reached many high goals in his life despite having a troubled early adolescence which he describes in detail. His Air Force experience as an Intelligence Officer was also one of high adventure. Prentiss has described himself psychologically as a "seeker of high sensation." This is borne out in his memoir including his choice to be a Volunteer Fireman and his Air Force "close calls." Much of his life is told in the details of his life and times. A reader will have a better feel for the years between 1932 and the present after reading this Memoir.

How psychopharmacology has usurped the role of psychotherapy in our society, to the great detriment of the patients involved. William Glasser describes in Warning: Psychiatry Can Be Hazardous to Your Mental Health the sea change that has taken place in the treatment of mental health in the last few years. Millions of patients are now routinely being given prescriptions for a wide range of drugs including Ritalin, Prosac, Zoloft and related drugs which can be harmful to the brain. A previous generation of patients would have had a course of psychotherapy without brain–damaging chemicals. Glasser explains the wide implications of this radical change in treatment and what can be done to counter it.

Runkel, professor of psychology and education at the University of Oregon. 500 pages of original letters show how Phil Runkel reevaluated everything he knew about psychology. This focused correspondence deals with the science (or lack thereof) and (inappropriate) methods used in psychology while introducing a new approach to a new natural science of psychology. Enclosures that go with the letters are available on the web.

These introductions and readings provide a comprehensive range of information for the study of Perceptual Control Theory—papers, books, book reviews, resources on-line, demos and tutorial programs for your computer. Perceptual Control Theory, PCT, results from one man's curiosity, expertise, creativity and determination. The articles, books, and tutorial programs introduced in this volume would not have been written, certainly not this way, if it were not for William T. (Bill) Powers's seminal insight and tireless efforts across more that sixty years. The PCT explanation for what behavior is, how it works and what it accomplishes is well documented. It lays a foundation for a new natural science and can handle behavioral phenomena within a single testable concept of how living systems work. You can demonstrate it yourself with functioning computer simulations. Whether you are interested in improving education, resolving chronic psychological stress, understanding what is going on with an inconsolable baby, understanding the basis for our universal sense of justice, getting a different take on what emotions are, resolving conflict in general, becoming a better parent, manager, sales person, friend or lover, you will find fascinating insight when you review these readings and study this new explanatory concept with care.
A must read for teachers of mathematics! The perrennial question, "When will I ever use this stuff," prompts a parent to look deeply into his son's math program. In his search for the scope and meaning of "stuff," he finds that the subject of math is totally unlike any other high school subject. Also apparent is that promoted reforms whether politically motivated, profit driven, or theoretically rooted in educational psychology, good or bad, generally have a poor long term success rate. The semi-fictional, often-humorous style of "Math Stuff" provides a multi-dimensional view of the diverse elements of reform that, to be effective, must be jointly addressed. Taking a cue from a good math teacher, the book does not give the answers but rather suggests what to think about while determining them.

Learning Communities 2.0 is an insightful, incisive, and paradigm-shifting critique of today's coercive, 'inside-the-box,' Industrial Age testing and accountability movement, which authors Spady and Schwahn describe as a politically driven, backward-facing juggernaut masquerading as reform. They call the compelling intellectual, functional, and moral alternative described in this book Empowering Learning Communities (ELCs). Drawing on mountains of insightful research and innovative practices from their vast experience and international consulting work in education, they clearly, systematically, and compellingly describe the distinguishing and defining components of ELCs, why ELCs are desperately needed in today's Age of Empowerment, how ELCs differ from 'educentric' schools, how ELCs function, the life-performance outcomes that shape ELCs' instructional priorities, and the strategies, frameworks, and transformational technologies that local communities can use to design and implement the key elements of ELCs in a number of creative ways. This is education's inevitable future.
