This is the fourth book in a series dealing with breast cancer. Volumes 1-3 were concerned with treatment, experimental biology, and a number of varied timely topics. The present volume continues to review the breast cancer field in the broadest sense. The first chapter addresses the question of selecting appropriate chemotherapy for the patient. In the 1970s, great advances were seen in our ability to achieve objective tumor regression with empirical combina tions of chemotherapeutic agents. The next decade will focus on precise methods to select those agents likely to have the greatest benefit in individual patients. Livingston has provided us with a thorough review of the current state of the art. We have known for some time that steroid hormone receptor assays of considerable value to clinicians caring for patients with advanced disease. Osborne and colleagues now present considerable arguments that receptor assays are also useful in the setting of primary breast cancer for purposes of both prognosis and treatment strategy. A very important clinical problem which has received little attention in the research laboratory is benign breast disease. If one inquires about the medical therapy of this disorder in the United States, it is obvious that the majority of physicians would appreciate a better understanding of the pathophysiology which might lead to improved therapies. Modeling of Post-Myocardial Infarction: ODE/PDE Analysis with R presents mathematical models for the dynamics of a post-myocardial (post-MI), aka, a heart attack. The mathematical models discussed consist of six ordinary differential equations (ODEs) with dependent variables Mun; M1; M2; IL10; Ta; IL1. The system variables are explained as follows: dependent variable Mun = cell density of unactivated macrophage; dependent variable M1 = cell density of M1 macrophage; dependent variable M2 = cell density of M2 macrophage; dependent variable IL10 = concentration of IL10, (interleuken-10); dependent variable Ta = concentration of TNF-a (tumor necrosis factor-a); dependent variable IL1 = concentration of IL1 (interleuken-1). The system of six ODEs does not include a spatial aspect of an MI in the cardiac tissue. Therefore, the ODE model is extended to include a spatial effect by the addition of diffusion terms. As a body, these records are extracted from roughly 750 known Bibles and extend from the late 18th through the early 20th centuries, with the greatest concentration from the mid-19th century. Most of the entries refer to births, marriages, and deaths and in most cases indicate the name(s) of the principals, the date of the event, and, sometimes, such supplementary information as his/her age or address, the maiden name of a parent, etc. Each Bible record is identified by family name and followed by a reference to the Huguenot Society records where the original can be found. In all, the records refer to more than 2,500 main families named in the surname index at the back of the volume and embrace a staggering 25,000 individuals of Huguenot or possible Huguenot ancestry--connections and allied families that would otherwise be lost to us in the unpublished files of this august organization.
