Conjugal Misconduct reveals the hidden history of controversial and legally contested marital arrangements in twentieth-century America. William Kuby examines the experiences of couples in unconventional unions and the legal and cultural backlash generated by a wide array of 'alternative' marriages. These include marriages established through personal advertisements and matchmaking bureaus, marriages that defied state eugenic regulations, hasty marriages between divorced persons, provisional and temporary unions referred to as 'trial marriages', racial intermarriages, and a host of other unions that challenged sexual and marital norms. In illuminating the tensions between those who set marriage policies and those who defied them, Kuby offers a fresh account of marriage's contested history, arguing that although marital nonconformists composed only a small minority of the population, their atypical arrangements nonetheless shifted popular understandings of marriage and consistently refashioned the legal parameters of the institution.
The question may be met with chagrin by traditionalists, but the identity of the Bard is not definitely decided. During the 20th century, Edward de Vere, the most flamboyant of the courtier poets, a man of the theater and literary patron, became the leading candidate for an alternative Shakespeare. In 1969 after 20 years living in New York City, Engineer, Photographer & Educator William Henry Mackey, Jr. returned to the rural Georgia backwoods where he had been raised. During the 20 years since he had left, the South had undergone drastic changes, from the Civil Rights Era to the technological advances in farming techniques, yet at the same time it remained the same simple place where he had grown up. Mackey proceeded to photograph and interview friends, family and other residents of the area in an effort to document their history and recollections of an era that was fast fading under the onslaught of 'progress'. The result is a fascinating look into the legacy of rural Blacks in coastal Georgia and the political, technological and social changes they underwent during the century since the Emancipation Proclamation.
The following is a compilation of soldiers using service records, rolls found in papers, in the commanding officer’s papers, obituaries, and newspaper accounts. No one can actually get all as some records may be lost or destroyed, names may be different due to spelling, the use of a nickname, or the same name with conflicting information detailing with two or more persons with same name and records combined. Some records may and are of the same soldier with different companies. This is due to the fact that after the first year, soldiers were given the option to stay with the current company or leave and join another and the combining of soldiers toward the end of the war. Another reason will be soldiers being discharged early in the war and rejoining another company later on in the war.
