During the Second World War, just under 2000 British citizens were detained without charge, trial or term set, under Regulation 18B of the wartime Defence Regulations. This book provides a comprehensive study of Regulation 18B and its precursor in the First World War, Regulation 14B.
Mr. Smith has rescued from obscurity all references to individuals as can be found in the early statutes of Kentucky, producing, in effect, the Kentucky equivalent of Personal Names in Hening's Statutes at Large of Virginia. For each of the 5,000 persons named in this index, there is provided an identifying piece of information, such as occupation, legal status, relationship, etc., as well as the volume and page number in "Littell's Laws" where the name originally appears. This volume is also available on our Family Archive CD 7519.
The 2nd Edition of Carbonate Reservoirs aims to educate graduate students and industry professionals on the complexities of porosity evolution in carbonate reservoirs. In the intervening 12 years since the first edition, there have been numerous studies of value published that need to be recognized and incorporated in the topics discussed. A chapter on the impact of global tectonics and biological evolution on the carbonate system has been added to emphasize the effects of global earth processes and the changing nature of life on earth through Phanerozoic time on all aspects of the carbonate system. The centerpiece of this chapter—and easily the most important synthesis of carbonate concepts developed since the 2001 edition—is the discussion of the CATT hypothesis, an integrated global database bringing together stratigraphy, tectonics, global climate, oceanic geochemistry, carbonate platform characteristics, and biologic evolution in a common time framework. Another new chapter concerns naturally fractured carbonates, a subject of increasing importance, given recent technological developments in 3D seismic, reservoir modeling, and reservoir production techniques. - Detailed porosity classifications schemes for easy comparison - Overview of the carbonate sedimentologic system - Case studies to blend theory and practice
Inspired by the foreign policy entanglements of recent years, William V. Spanos offers a dramatic interpretation of TwainÕs classic A Connecticut Yankee in King ArthurÕs Court, providing a fresh assessment of the place of a global America in the American imaginary. Spanos insists that Twain identifies with his protagonist, particularly in his defining use of the spectacle, and thus with an American exceptionalism that uncannily anticipates the George W. Bush administrationÕs normalization of the state of exception and the imperial policy of Òpreemptive war,Ó unilateral Òregime change,Ó and Òshock and aweÓ tactics. Equally stimulating is SpanosÕs thoroughly original ontology of American exceptionalism and imperialism and his tracing of these forces in Twain studies and criticism over the past century.
From the early days of hot air ballooning to supersonic aircraft, High Frontier chronicles the history of flight in Pennsylvania. Early experimentation with lighter-than-air craft in the nineteenth century was followed by significant advances in aerodynamics, the advent of the airplane, and its gradual acceptance by the public. The state had its own contingent of inventors and aviators, who flew and crashed their homemade machines in countless exhibitions. After World War I commercial flights took wing, including government airmail delivery, and expanded airports, federal and state regulation of aeronautics laid the groundwork for the growth of the industry.
Ethics, the first volume of McClendon's Systematic Theology, explored the shape of life in the Christian community. Doctrine, the second volume, investigated the teaching necessary to sustain that life. Witness, the third and final volume of the work, considers the wider context in which that life takes place. It asserts that the church's identity is established not only by how it lives and what it teaches but also by how it enters into conversation and connects with systems of thought and social structures outside itself. McClendon continues here his exploration of "the baptist vision," a tradition of the church's understanding of itself, its relation to Scripture, and its place in the larger society, which flows from the Radical Reformation of the 16th century. He employs that vision to engage in conversation with three principal partners: other theologies; current philosophy; and culture, including science and letters, the fine and performing arts, and politics--in short, what Scripture calls "the world.
This highly illustrated volume is a compendium of evidence and examples of change on Heard Island, a World Heritage Site near Antarctica and one of the most remote places on earth. Drawing on records from the past two centuries, as well as his own expeditions to the island in 1997 and 2016, the author provides visual evidence for the changes wrought by climate change, erosion, and environmental policy. Various phenomena not previously observed on Heard Island are documented, such as fluid dynamic instabilities and the destruction of the seawalls of a major lagoon. Based on the past, the author makes predictions about Heard Island for specific years in the future: 2031 (decade), 2051 (tricade), 2121 (century), 3021 (millennium), and 1,002,021 (millionium). The book serves as an important link between the past and future of Heard Island.
A compelling book that examines Gordon Brown's rise to power, his years as Chancellor, and his dramatic decision to give the Bank of England independence "An essential read for anyone who wants to properly understand political and economic policy developments over the past 15 years and enjoy some good insights about the future." Neil Kinnock, Vice President of the European Commission and former leader of the Labour Party. "For twenty years one of the most sceptical and authoritative voices on economic affairs in the British press." Robert Harris, best selling author. "A splendidly vivid account of the background, outlook and record of the most powerful Chancellor of modern times." Anthony Howard, biographer and political commentator. The economic policy of new Labour has been fundamental to its success. Gordon Brown has been at the very heart of new Labour's economic policy since the late 1980s and has been highly instrumental in convincing both the British public and the City that a Labour government can run the economy responsibly. He has generally been a popular and well-respected Chancellor - during his early years in office, he was highly praised for his prudence and yet now, well into the second term of office many of the issues on which the Blair government was elected, such as health and education, have not yet been satisfactorily addressed, and Gordon Brown is now being criticised for what many see as his imprudence in handling the nationĂ¢??s finances. Examining how successful LabourĂ¢??s economic policy has really been, when allowing for the good fortune of a world-wide economic boom, Keegan provides insights into the policies of new Labour, Gordon Brown's rise to power, the impact of his policies and how future policies might influence the economy. Written by a well-known and highly respected journalist who has been close to the heart of politics in Britain for many years, and who is thus able to offer an insiderĂ¢??s view of how policy developed in both opposition and the Government Examines the professional relationships and private friction between Brown, other members of the Cabinet and the Bank of England Includes much previously unpublished material William Keegan is Associate Editor (since 1983) and Economics Editor (since 1977) of The Observer newspaper. A graduate of Trinity College, Cambridge, he has previously held posts with the Financial Times, Daily Mail and Bank of England Economic Intelligence Department. He has sat on a range of advisory committees, including the BBC Advisory Committee on Business and Industrial Affairs, the Employment Institute Council and the Department of Economics Advisory Board, University of Cambridge. He is visiting Professor of Journalism at Sheffield University and is the author of a variety of successful books.
