Wordsworth's “The Prelude” is an autobiographical poem written in blank verse within which he reveals intimate details of his life. First published after Wordsworth's death in 1880 and titled by his widow Mary, “The Prelude” is Wordsworth's autobiographical magnum opus within which he offers the reader a plethora of personal details about his life. William Wordsworth was an English poet who helped to form the Romantic Age. Wordsworth's best work is considered to be The Prelude, a semiautobiographical poem about his early years. Wordsworth's first published poetry was the collections An Evening Walk and Descriptive Sketches (1793). In 1843 Wordsworth became Poet Laureate. The book includes the Jacobin A Letter to the Bishop of Llandaff (1793), infused with the doctrines of Tom Paine; the liberal republican 'prose poem' The Convention of Cintra (1809), the Tory apologetics of Two Addresses to the Freeholders of Westmoreland (1818), and the welfare-state philosophy of the 1835 Postscript in which Wordsworth married the Coleridgean concept of a society leavened by its 'clerisy' to a devastating critique of laissez-faire 'political economy'. The extensive commentary provided by Owen & Smyser to these texts has been converted to footnotes for ease of use.

'Essays of Robert Louis Stevenson' is a work of literary criticism on the works of Stevenson that reveal his personality, character, and opinions. William Lyon Phelps was born on 2nd January 1865, in New Haven, Conneticut, United States. Phelps earned a B.A. in 1887, writing his thesis on the Idealism of George Berkeley. He then gained an M.A. in 1891 from Yale and his PhD from Harvard in the same year. During his time a Yale, he offered a course in modern novels which brought the university considerable attention both nationally and internationally. Phelps published many essays on modern and European literature, including titles such as 'Essays on Modern Novelists' (1910), 'Some Makers of American Literature' (1923), and 'As I Like it' (1923).
This book, which presents the whole splendid history of English literature from Anglo-Saxon times to the close of the Victorian Era, has three specific aims. The first is to create or to encourage in every student the desire to read the best books, and to know literature itself rather than what has been written about literature. The second is to interpret literature both personally and historically, that is, to show how a great book generally reflects not only the author's life and thought but also the spirit of the age and the ideals of the nation's history. This book is about memory, the power of memory, the weight of memory, the presence of memory. Its about how memory works, and its about how memory moves and shapes us, profoundly and deeply, every moment of every day. Most of all, however, its about how memory points us to some questions that, try as we might, we cannot elude altogether, questions that force us to confront the very nature of existence.
