“[A] dramatic and vividly detailed narrative chronicles one of the pivotal episodes of the Civil War . . . Majestic military history.” —Booklist It was one of the most startling events of the Civil War, the “hour of destiny” for the Union. Faced with the prospect of catastrophic defeat, the North’s greatest generals—Ulysses Grant, William Tecumseh Sherman, George Thomas, and Phil Sheridan—were commanding a battle for the besieged city of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Suddenly, as an aghast Grant and Thomas watched, the beleaguered federal troops began a headlong, climactic, seemingly suicidal charge up the face of a six-hundred-foot-high mountain ridge overlooking the city, under ferocious fire from the Confederate infantry that held the ridge. The siege of Chattanooga and its stuffing turnabout form the core of Wiley Sword’s lively narrative. Dozens of previously unpublished photographs, maps, and excepts from private journals, and letters enhance this vivid account. Written with novelistic flair and a historian’s authority, Mountains Touched with Fire captures every side of this crucial Civil War battle whose aftermath sealed the fate of the South. “Masterfully describing one of the truly decisive events of the Civil War . . . Mountains Touched with Fire combines the furious battle action with behind-the-scenes political maneuvering and astute historical analysis.” —Nashville Banner “A significant contribution to Civil War battle history.” —Publishers Weekly “A well-told tale of the fascinating events.” —John Wilson, Chattanooga New Free Press “Interesting, entertaining, and informative . . . An excellent storyteller with a good story to tell.” —Steve Woodworth, Blue & Gra
The rise of Civil War general John Bell Hood, his command of the Confederate Army of Tennessee, and the decisions that led to its downfall. Though he barely escaped expulsion from West Point, John Bell Hood quickly rose through the ranks of the Confederate army. With bold leadership in the battles of Gaines’ Mill and Antietam, Hood won favor with Confederate president Jefferson Davis. But his fortunes in war took a tragic turn when he assumed command of the Confederate Army of Tennessee. After the fall of Atlanta, Hood marched his troops north in an attempt to draw Union army general William T. Sherman from his devastating “March to the Sea.” But the ploy proved ruinous for the South. While Sherman was undeterred from his scorched-earth campaign, Hood and his troops charged headlong into catastrophe. In this compelling account, Wiley Sword illustrates the poor command decisions and reckless pride that made a disaster of the Army of Tennessee’s final campaign. From Spring Hill, where they squandered an early advantage, Hood and his troops launched an ill-fated attack on the neighboring town of Franklin. The disastrous battle came to be known as the “Gettysburg of the West.” But worse was to come as Hood pressed on to Nashville, where his battered troops suffered the worst defeat of the entire war. Winner of the Fletcher Pratt Award for best work of nonfiction about the Civil War, The Confederacy’s Last Hurrah chronicles the destruction of the South’s second largest army. “Narrated with brisk attention to the nuances of strategy—and with measured solemnity over the waste of life in war,” it is a groundbreaking work of scholarship told with authority and compassion (Kirkus Reviews).
If it is necessary that I should fall on the battlefield for . . . my courage does not halt or falter" – Major Sullivan Ballou, 1861, prior to the Battle of Bull Run In Courage Under Fire, award-winning historian Wiley Sword captures the fervor of a nation at war with itself; a war that pitted brother against brother. Through the immediacy of diaries and letters written not only on the battlefields and in camps but also on the deathbeds of soldiers from both the North and South, Sword lays bare the complexities and depth of a soldier's mind in coming to grips with life and death – even while his country, and often his family, is mercilessly ripped apart. From wives and mothers to the highest military figures, all strived toward often worthy but difficult objectives, while seeking to suffer as little as possible. Featured in this compelling study of men and women facing the severest stress of their lives are fascinating stories such as that of Union Lieutenant Colonel Frank Curtiss. He was ordered to take his regiment, the 127th Illinois, in a hopeless charge against the enemy's fortified lines at Atlanta, Ga. on August 3, 1864. Aware that many of his men would die needlessly and for minimal tactical gain, he refused to obey these orders. The moral courage to fight meant also to appropriately assess the risks and weigh the loss in lives of one's soldiers. Confederate General John Bell Hood's decision to sacrifice much of his army at Franklin, Tennessee on November 30th 1864, ranks as one of the saddest events of the war. His aggressive behavior is assessed in terms of both moral and physical courage, providing a revealing insight into the character of one of the war's key commanders. The prospect of death in battle was a fearsome prospect for Lucy Morse, who kept desperate hope her husband, William H. Morse, would survive the fighting. She wrote to him,"I was almost crazy before I heard from you for fear that you had shared the fate of many a brave soldier." Her story and that of the fateful events in their lives provides graphic evidence of the fiber of America's soldiers and their worthy families. In a revealing portrait of courage and its often bloody consequences, Wiley Sword conveys a vivid picture of bravery under extreme stress, which is fully appropriate in today's world.
Southern pride-the notion that the South's character distinguishes it from the rest of the country-had a profound impact on how and why Confederates fought the Civil War, and continued to mold their psyche after they had been defeated. In Southern Invincibility, award-winning historian Wiley Sword traces the roots of the South's belief in its own superiority and examines the ways in which that conviction contributed to the war effort, even when it became clear that the South would not win. Informed by thorough research, Southern Invincibility is the historical investigation of a psychology that continues to define the South.
Widely practiced but not always understood, the Filipino martial arts have a rich history and distinctive character that have not fully been documented until now. Written in the context of Philippine history and culture, Filipino Martial Culture uncovers the esoteric components of the Filipino martial arts and the life histories of the men who perpetuate them. Included are: the history of turbulence and war in the Philippines from prehistoric times to the present day; the culture of the Filipino martial arts, including warrior ethos and worldview, spirituality, folklore, and weaponry; biographical sketches of eighteen Filipino masters and descriptions of their respective fighting styles; and a comparative study of the ethos, ideology, and development of the Filipino martial arts in relation to the considerable martial traditions of India, China, and Japan. In the course of his research, internationally renowned martial arts master and scholar Mark V. Wiley traveled the globe, interviewing top masters and recording their life histories, thoughts, and anecdotes. In addition, he collected 320 historical photographs and illustrations, including step-by-step sequences of the masters demonstrating the distinctive techniques of their particular martial styles. A classic reference for practitioners and researchers alike, this Filipino martial arts book is as much a definitive anthropological textbook as it is a practical guide to Arnis, Kali, Eskrima, and the other martial arts of the Philippines.
In this companion to The Life of Johnny Reb, Bell Irvin Wiley explores the daily lives of the men in blue who fought to save the Union. With the help of many soldiers' letters and diaries, Wiley explains who these men were and why they fought, how they reacted to combat and the strain of prolonged conflict, and what they thought about the land and the people of Dixie. This fascinating social history reveals that while the Yanks and the Rebs fought for very different causes, the men on both sides were very much the same. "This wonderfully interesting book is the finest memorial the Union soldier is ever likely to have.... [Wiley] has written about the Northern troops with an admirable objectivity, with sympathy and understanding and profound respect for their fighting abilities. He has also written about them with fabulous learning and considerable pace and humor.

A recent trend in contemporary western political theory is to criticize it for implicitly trying to "conquer," "displace" or "moralize" politics. James Wiley’s book takes the "next step," from criticizing contemporary political theory, to showing what a more "politics-centered" political theory would look like by exploring the meaning and value of politics in the writings of Max Weber, Carl Schmitt, Paul Ricoeur, Hannah Arendt, Sheldon Wolin, Claude Lefort, and Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe. These political theorists all use the concept of "the political" to explain the value of politics and defend it from its detractors. They represent state-centered, republic-centered and society-centered conceptions of politics, as well as realist, authoritarian, idealist, republican, populist and radical democratic traditions of political thought. This book compares these theorists and traditions of "the political" in order to defend politics from its critics and to contribute to the development of a politics-centered political theory. Politics and the Concept of the Political will be a useful resource to general audiences as well as to specialists in political theory.

But her desires are harder to control . . . Tormented by the memories of his imprisonment at the hands of a vicious mercenary, Sir Nathan Staves is glad to be abroad on a quest for His Majesty. His task promises the chance to recover a legendary lost bounty, but also throws him into the path of the beguiling Meg. These pages are written out of a deep concern for the lame, the lost, and particularly for the Christian community in general. The majority of these sermons were delivered in connection with brief revival services throughout America in churches and associations and during conventions local, state, and national. These sermons proved to be such blessings to those who heard them delivered that they are now presented to the public at large with hope that many will be blessed by reading them. Every sermon is packed with a challenge to the mind, conscience, and the heart. For more than a decade, the idea has used me that the preacheraEUR"prophet and pastoraEUR"teacher are among the most pivotal factors and powerful forces in the passing parade of history. The mannerism and methodology of the master during his public ministry varnishes and vindicates the soundness and significance of these concepts. It was primarily against the religious leadership, the soaEUR"called heads of the temple, and supervisors of the synagogue whom Christ pressed serious charges and to whom he addressed pestiferous sayings. No claim is made to any striking originality, scholarly content, unusual authority, or unique writing. They are humble and honest words from my workshop released in the confident hope that they can be "a lamp unto the feet and a light unto the pathway.

This book complements and expands on the commentary andconclusions of the author's initial inquiry into the modern era ofmedia-made culture in The Visual Focus of American Media Culture inthe Twentieth Century (FDUP, 2004). From the 1890s on to the 1920sand the Depression and World War II years, society's pervasivelycommunal focus demanded idealized images and romanticizedinterpretations of life. But the communal imperative, as it was impactedon by evolving social change, harbored the seeds of its owndisintegration.
Djinn of the Fallen By: K. Wiley Djinn of the Fallen is a book about trust and alliances as well as solidarity in a world where lines are clearly drawn. Discover a universe filled with magical creatures and beings as they struggle to become stronger and resist those who seek to devour and destroy. While some may return to life for a second chance, others are not so lucky.
There is something peculiarly pleasing in the pictures which Mr. Wiley presents to the imagination. He does not deal in the darker and sterner materials of humanity to which some writers of fiction are so partial, and which they find so useful in making up scenes of agony and horror. Neither does he delight, as some, to pour out bitterness and gall, satire and invective, against social order and the human race. His landscape has always more of the sunshine than of the shade, and his men and women the clear serene aspect of truth and goodness. He relies for effect on the influence of the gentler rather than of the more violent emotions, and appeal* much more to the affections than to the passions. The reader of " Alamance " on closing the volume, Will not feel perhaps the fierce and painful agitation consequent upon the perusal of a fiction of the modern French school, but he will find his mind stored with scenes and ideas on which the memory will dwell with oft recurring pleasure, he will find himself a wiser, a belter, and a happier man. As a writer of historical fiction, Mr. Wiley deserves special commendation. He has opened an entirely new vein of American history. His " Alamance" and his "Utopia" have given an unpre-cedented impulse to historical inquiry in the state of North Carolina, to which they both refer.
Does it feel like no matter where you look or what the issue is, everyone seems to be fighting about everything? We live in the information age, with more access to knowledge than ever before, flowing to us in a never-ending digital stream of updates, statistics, polls, opinions, news, and narratives from those on opposing sides of any issue. And while we’d assume this influx of information would help us find a good, informed way forward in our culture, it actually stirs up all sorts of anger, anxiety, and even loneliness. This all contributes to an increasingly defensive society that feels like it’s not only fracturing, but could go up in flames at any moment. If you’re anything like the contributors to World on Fire, you’ve realized that all this knowledge isn’t the same thing as wisdom. While our world relies on expected, reflexive, status-quo, earthly wisdom to make a way forward or take a side on any given issue, Christ would rather us rely on his unexpected, counterintuitive, going-against-the- grain, heavenly wisdom as outlined in his famous Beatitudes. This surprising wisdom is not a call to be removed from the fire we feel blazing around us, but one to engage and tame it—beginning with our own hearts. Whatever those nearest you seem to be arguing about today, and no matter what the fire looks like in your neck of the woods, Jesus has an answer for the ways his kingdom citizens should walk as they navigate the flames in his power and posture. In their own unique voice and in their own unique way, each contributor in World on Fire welcomes you to come explore not only some of the polarizing issues of our day, but how the unexpected wisdom of Jesus might help us be more discerning and Christlike amidst them.

The Life and Works of Lev Ivanov is the first book-length study in any language about this Russian artist - Marius Petipa's colleague and Tchaikovsky's collaborator - who is widely celebrated and yet virtually unknown. It follows Ivanov from his infancy in a St Petersburg foundling home through his training in the Imperial Theatre School and his celebrity marriage, to a career as a dancer, régisseur, and choreographer in the St Petersburg Imperial Ballet. Ivanov's artistic world is described, as is his legacy - some dozen works, including Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and the famous dances from Prince Igor - which inspired Mikhail Fokine in the next generation. The book is richly documented, including the first complete publication of Ivanov's memoirs, and hundreds of citations, many published here for the first time, from state documents, reminiscences, and criticism.
