Der vorliegende Band stellt Vortragsmanuskripte einer am Mathematischen Forschungsinstitut, Oberwolfach, in der Zeit vom 25. bis 31. Mai 1975 veran stalteten Tagung zusammen, die unter der Leitung der Unterzeichner stand. Die letzten dieser Tagungen über numerische Methoden der Approximations theorie fanden 1971 und 1973 statt - der Schwerpunkt lag bei Fragen der Numerik von Algorithmen zur Darstellung von Funktionen -, ließen aber bereits ein wachsendes Interesse an Anwendungen erkennen. Die diesjährige Tagung war gekennzeichnet durch die Behandlung praktischer AufgabensteI lungen sowie durch die Einbeziehung der Anwendungen aus Nachbargebie ten bzw. die Verwendung der Methoden dieser Gebiete in der Approxima tionstheorie, insbesondere wurde auch auf die Beziehungen von Optimierung und Kontrolltheorie zu speziellen approximationstheoretischen Aufgaben eingegangen. Der starke Einfluß auf die numerischen Methoden zur Behand lung von Differentialgleichungen wurde etwa bei der Methode der finiten Elemente oder bei Kollokationsaufgaben deutlich. So ist zu hoffen, daß auch diese Tagung dazu beigetragen hat, Theorie und Anwendungen wieder stärker zu verbinden. Die spezifische Atmosphäre des Forschungsinstituts stimulierte einen intensi ven, durch die breite internationale Streuung der Tagungsteilnehmer verstärk ten, fruchtbaren Gedankenaustausch. Zum Erfolg der Tagung trug - wie immer - die hervorragende Betreuung durch die Mitarbeiter und Angestellten des Forschungsinstituts und das verständnisvolle Entgegenkommen von Herrn Kollege Barner bei. The Fundamental Issues Involved Why do we need a theory of uncertainty? It is a fact that almost all man's economic decisions are made under conditions of uncertainty, but this fact alone does not provide a strong enough argument for making the effort necessary to generalize ordinary preference theory designed for a world of perfect certainty. In accordance with Occam's Razor, the mathematician may well welcome a generalization of assumptions even if it does not promise more than a restatement of known results. The economist, however, will only be well disposed towards making the effort if he can expect to achieve new insights and interesting results, for he is interested in the techniques necessary for the generalization only as means to an end, not as ends in themselves. A stronger reason for developing a theory of uncertainty, therefore, seems to be the fact that there are kinds of economic activities to which the non-stochastic preference theory has no access or has access only through highly artificial constructions. Such activities include portfolio decisions of wealth holders, speculation, and insurance. These will be considered in detail in the last chapter of the book. The main purpose of this book, however, is not to apply a theory of uncertainty to concrete economic problems, the purpose rather is to formulate such a theory.
Fungal infections in the female play an increasingly large role in everyday gynecological practice. This is the first book to deal comprehensively with vulvovaginal candidosis. Werner Schroeter was a leading figure of New German Cinema. In more than forty films made between 1967 and 2008, including features, documentaries, and shorts, he ignored conventional narrative, creating instead dense, evocative collages of image and sound. For years, his work was eclipsed by contemporaries such as Wim Wenders, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Werner Herzog, and Alexander Kluge. Yet his work has become known to a wider audience through several recent retrospectives, including at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. A sharp, lively, even funny memoir, Days of Twilight, Nights of Frenzy captures Schroeter’s extravagant life vividly over a vast prolific career, including many stories that might have been lost were it not for this book. Since the advent of the laser, coherent optics has developed at an ever increasing pace. There is no doubt about the reason. Coherent light, with its properties so different from the light we are surrounded by, lends itself to numerous applications in science, technology, and life. The bandwidth of coherent optics reaches from holography and interferometry, with its gravitational wave detectors, to the CD player for music, movies, and computers; from the laser scalpel, which allows surgical cutting in the interior of the eye without destruction of the layers penetrated in front of it, to optical information and data processing with its great impact on society. According to its importance, the foundations of coherent optics should be conveyed to students of natural sciences as early as possible to better prepare them for their future careers as physicists or engineers. The present book tries to serve this need: to promote the foundations of coherent optics. Special attention is paid to a thorough presentation of the fundamentals. This should enable the reader to follow the contemporary literature from a firm basis. The wealth of material, of course, makes necessary a restriction of the topics included.
