Der vorliegende Band stellt Vortragsmanuskripte einer am Mathematischen Forschungsinstitut, Oberwolfach, in der Zeit vom 25. bis 31. Mai 1975 veran stalteten Tagung zusammen, die unter der Leitung der Unterzeichner stand. Die letzten dieser Tagungen über numerische Methoden der Approximations theorie fanden 1971 und 1973 statt - der Schwerpunkt lag bei Fragen der Numerik von Algorithmen zur Darstellung von Funktionen -, ließen aber bereits ein wachsendes Interesse an Anwendungen erkennen. Die diesjährige Tagung war gekennzeichnet durch die Behandlung praktischer AufgabensteI lungen sowie durch die Einbeziehung der Anwendungen aus Nachbargebie ten bzw. die Verwendung der Methoden dieser Gebiete in der Approxima tionstheorie, insbesondere wurde auch auf die Beziehungen von Optimierung und Kontrolltheorie zu speziellen approximationstheoretischen Aufgaben eingegangen. Der starke Einfluß auf die numerischen Methoden zur Behand lung von Differentialgleichungen wurde etwa bei der Methode der finiten Elemente oder bei Kollokationsaufgaben deutlich. So ist zu hoffen, daß auch diese Tagung dazu beigetragen hat, Theorie und Anwendungen wieder stärker zu verbinden. Die spezifische Atmosphäre des Forschungsinstituts stimulierte einen intensi ven, durch die breite internationale Streuung der Tagungsteilnehmer verstärk ten, fruchtbaren Gedankenaustausch. Zum Erfolg der Tagung trug - wie immer - die hervorragende Betreuung durch die Mitarbeiter und Angestellten des Forschungsinstituts und das verständnisvolle Entgegenkommen von Herrn Kollege Barner bei. Between 1941 and 1944 Waffen-SS Oberscharfôhrer (Sergeant) Werner Kindler took part in 84 days of close combat, qualifying him for the Close Combat Clasp in Gold, the Third Reich's highest decoration for a frontline soldier. He was also awarded the German Cross in Gold, the Iron Cross First and Second Class and the Wound Badge in Gold.??Drafted into the SS-Totenkopf in 1939, he served with a motorised unit in Poland, and in May 1941 was selected for the Leibstandarte-SS Adolf Hitler, with which he fought in the invasion of the Soviet Union. His unit converted to a Panzer Grenadier formation in 1942, and Kindler went on to fight at Kharkov and Kursk on the Eastern Front, and later in Belgium and France in 1944. At the end of the war, he was the last man of the Leibstandarte-SS to surrender to the Americans. This is one of the most dramatic first-hand accounts to come out of the Second World War.

Nothing is "pure" in America, and, indeed, the rich ethnic mix that constitutes our society accounts for much of its amazing vitality. Werner Sollors's new book takes a wide-ranging look at the role of "ethnicity" in American literature and what that literature has said--and continues to say--about our diverse culture. Ethnic consciousness, he contends, is a constituent feature of modernism, not modernism's antithesis. Discussing works from every period of American history, Sollors focuses particularly on the tension between "descent" and "consent"--between the concern for one's racial, ethnic, and familial heritage and the conflicting desire to choose one's own destiny, even if that choice goes against one's heritage. Some of the stories Sollors examines are retellings of the biblical Exodus--stories in which Americans of the most diverse origins have painted their own histories as an escape from bondage or a search for a new Canaan. Other stories are "American-made" tales of melting-pot romance, which may either triumph in intermarriage, accompanied by new world symphonies, or end with the lovers' death. Still other stories concern voyages of self-discovery in which the hero attempts to steer a perilous course between stubborn traditionalism and total assimilation. And then there are the generational sagas, in which, as if by magic, the third generation emerges as the fulfillment of their forebears' dream. Citing examples that range from the writings of Cotton Mather to Liquid Sky (a "post-punk" science fiction film directed by a Russian emigre), Sollors shows how the creators of American culture have generally been attracted to what is most new and modern. This book is a comprehensive, unifying introduction to the field of mathematical analysis and the mathematics of computing. It develops the relevant theory at a modern level and it directly relates modern mathematical ideas to their diverse applications. The authors develop the whole theory. Starting with a simple axiom system for the real numbers, they then lay the foundations, developing the theory, exemplifying where it's applicable, in turn motivating further development of the theory. They progress from sets, structures, and numbers to metric spaces, continuous functions in metric spaces, linear normed spaces and linear mappings; and then differential calculus and its applications, the integral calculus, the gamma function, and linear integral operators. They then present important aspects of approximation theory, including numerical integration. The remaining parts of the book are devoted to ordinary differential equations, the discretization of operator equations, and numerical solutions of ordinary differential equations. This textbook contains many exercises of varying degrees of difficulty, suitable for self-study, and at the end of each chapter the authors present more advanced problems that shed light on interesting features, suitable for classroom seminars or study groups. It will be valuable for undergraduate and graduate students in mathematics, computer science, and related fields such as engineering. This is a rich field that has experienced enormous development in recent decades, and the book will also act as a reference for graduate students and practitioners who require a deeper understanding of the methodologies, techniques, and foundations.

Machine drives using closed-loop speed control are state of the art. As on drives without closed-loop speed control, the movement of a machine part at varying speeds frequently gives rise to a hazard against which the machine operators must be protected. The simplest means of preventing movements during manual intervention in danger zones is the (safe) disconnection of the energy driving the relevant motors. This is however often not possible, for example when intervention is required whilst the machine is running for the purpose of clearing faults, setup, during test operation, etc. Scenarios such as these require the machine to be operated with protective equipment disabled. In order for the operators‘ safety to be assured nonetheless, Annex I, Section 1.2.5 of the Machinery Directive sets out the required measures. Safety sub-functions for drive controls have been defined for implementation of the machine functions required for this purpose. Examples are STO (safe torque off), SLS (safely limited speed) and SS1 (safe stop 1). This report addresses the use of drive control equipment that implements safety sub-functions at a certain Performance Level according to ISO 13849-1 in consideration of the application and risks. The basic safety sub-functions of drive controls and the requirements relating to their use are presented. The principles of operation of frequency inverters and DC converters are described, and implementation of the safety sub-functions are explained. Examples are provided of application circuits by which the various machine safety functions can be implemented. The corresponding SISTEMA files for quantification of these safety functions are available for download free of charge. The examples include both standard frequency inverters and frequency inverters with integrated safety functions.
