Using a rich collection of contemporary sources, this study focuses on one group of English immigrants sent to Upper Canada from Sussex and other southern counties with the aid of parishes and landlords. In Part One, Wendy Cameron follows the work of the Petworth Emigration Committee over six years and trace how the immigrants were received in each of these years. In Part Two, Mary McDougall Maude presents a complete list of emigrants on Petworth ships from 1832 to 1837, including details of their background, family reconstructions, and additional information drawn from Canadian sources. Paternalism strong enough to slow the wheels of change is embodied here in Thomas Sockett, the organizer of the Petworth emigrations, and his patron, the Earl of Egremont, and in Lieutenant Governor Sir John Colborne in Upper Canada. The friction created as these men sought to sustain older values in the relationship between rich and poor highlights the shift in British emigration policy. This book offers a fresh approach to Hawthorne and O'Connor as writers of the American romance. Drawing from a contemporary philosophical context, it applies Gadamer's cultural critique of modernity to the moral and artistic visions conveyed through the authors' use of the literary form of romance. Hawthorne defines the romance form in terms of its freedom from the realism demanded by the novel. The writer of romance creates a neutral territory between the actual and imaginary, inner and outer reality. The world of the romance is therefore one of the author's own making, freed from the constraints of objective reality. As Hawthorne's formulation emphasizes mystery as the traditional realm of romance, it closes the gap between subject and object upon which modern scientific objectivity is based. Hawthorne's scientists, idealist philosophers, artists, and Puritans demonstrate not only his characteristic head and heart dichotomy, but also the prevailing subjectivism of Enlightenment modernity. O'Connor adopts Hawthorne's romance in her own use of the grotesque and for a similar ethical purpose. As a Catholic Christian, she distorts the real in order to reveal the mystery that surrounds existence. O'Connor's secular reformers, liberal intellectuals, and nihilists attempt to manipulate the world of matter in order to improve or remake the world to their own liking. Like Hawthorne's characters, they are confronted by the mystery of the romance to be recalled to the reality of their own finitude. In the field of hermeneutics, Gadamer makes claims that are pertinent to the narratives of Hawthorne and O'Connor. Against the dualism of modern method, he conceives of knowledge as a "fusion of horizons." This dialogic nature of knowledge calls into question the prevailing scientism of post-Enlightenment modernity. Like the fiction writers, he asserts the mystery of aesthetic experience against the will-to-power that, he argues, is characteristic of modern method. This interdisciplinary study seeks to demonstrate that Gadamer's notions of understanding and the philosophical nature of art shed new light on the moral dimension of the romances of Hawthorne and O'Connor.

Anne Bradstreet, Emily Dickinson, and Adrienne Rich share nationality, gender, and an aesthetic tradition, but each expresses these experiences in the context of her own historical moment. Puritanism imposed stringent demands on Bradstreet, romanticism both inspired and restricted Dickinson, and feminism challenged as well as liberated Rich. Nevertheless, each poet succeeded in forming a personal vision that counters traditional male poetics. From the moment the first English-speaking explorers and settlers arrived on the North American continent, many have described its various locations and environments as empty. Indeed, much of American national history and culture is bound up with the idea that parts of the landscape are empty and thus open for colonization, settlement, economic improvement, claim staking, taming, civilizing, cultivating, and the exploitation of resources. In turn, most Euro-American nonfiction written about the landscape has treated it either as an object to be acted upon by the author or an empty space, unspoiled by human contamination, to which the solitary individual goes to be refreshed and rejuvenated. In The Myth of Emptiness and the New American Literature of Place, Wendy Harding identifies an important recent development in the literature of place that corrects the misperceptions resulting from these tropes. Works by Rick Bass, Charles Bowden, Ellen Meloy, Jonathan Raban, Rebecca Solnit, and Robert Sullivan move away from the tradition of nature writing, with its emphasis on the solitary individual communing with nature in uninhabited places, to recognize the interactions of human and other-than-human presences in the land. In different ways, all six writers reveal a more historically complex relationship between Americans and their environments. In this new literature of place, writers revisit abandoned, threatened, or damaged sites that were once represented as devoid of human presence and dig deeper to reveal that they are in fact full of the signs of human activity. These writers are interested in the role of social, political, and cultural relationships and the traces they leave on the landscape. Throughout her exploration, Harding adopts a transdisciplinary perspective that draws on the theories of geographers, historians, sociologists, and philosophers to understand the reasons for the enduring perception of emptiness in the American landscape and how this new literature of place works with and against these ideas. She reminds us that by understanding and integrating human impacts into accounts of the landscape, we are better equipped to fully reckon with the natural and cultural crisis that engulfs all landscapes today.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, for many English men and women of Welsh origin the idea of being in some part 'Welsh' reaffirmed their own understanding of what it meant to 'be British'. Wales in England, 1914-1945 is the first cultural history of this English Welsh duality - an identification with two constituent nations at once - and explores how 'Welshness' was imagined, performed, and mobilised in England during and between the two world wars.
